Vonage Reviews

Vonage you are going to have to leave that one jack where your DSL modem is connected alone..

you are going to have to leave that one jack where your DSL modem is connected alone.. leave it connected to the incomming Bell lines at the DEMARC point in your basement or side of the house..

you need to disconnect the rest of your jacks at the DEMARC point, and then connect them all together.. remember, red goes to red, green to green.. yellow and black are likely not being used..

it is pretty simple to do if you understand and are comfortable with doing simple wiring.. it is hard to explain in writing here..

do you have your Vonage ATA sitting very near to your DSL Modem? how were you connecting both the Modem and your ATA to the telephone wiring in the house? do you have 2 jacks on the wall? or were you using a splitter?

I'm going to try to explain an easy setup, assuming you have your equpiment in the same place, and only have a single plug jack at that location..

-if you were using one, remove the splitter, you can use it later..
-you can get a dual-jack very cheap at a dollar store, or go to another store and get the exact same thing for $6-$10, your choice..
-anyways, remove the old single jack from teh wall, disconnect the wires inside..
-connect the red and green wires to one of the jacks on the new dual-jack, connecting red-red and green-green.. this will be your Dry-DSL line..
-now connect the yellow and black wires from the bell line in the wall to the other jack, here's where you need to pay attention, yellow will now be green, and black will be red. so connect the yellow wire to the green terminal on the second jack of your dual-jack, then connect the black wire to the red terminal on that same jack..
Now you have your office dual-jack wired for both your DRY DSL and your new Vonage service.. DO NOT PLUG anything in yet!

now, you have 2 choices: the first one is the best option for safety of your equipment..

a) Go to the DEMARC point, and disconnect all the wiring, leaving only the red and green wires that go to your office jack connected to Bell's wiring for your DSL, then connect the yellow and black wires to the red and green wires of the rest of your house's jacks, remembering that yellow is green and black is red.. (the yellow and black wires on the rest of the jacks will not be used, and should really be connected to a good ground, so static electricity in the house can find an easy path to ground, rather than going through your electronic equipment)
hopefully you can use a connection block to make all yoru wiring connections, if not, twist the wires together and use a marrett connector to make sure they stay together, this is not preffered to a connection block, but is easy and will work just fine..

b) you can open up all the other jacks in your house, and disconnect the red and green wires from the jacks, you should terminate them, which means, cut the exposed copper from them and tape them up.. then connect the yellow wires to the green terminal and the black wires to the red terminals.. ..you'll still need to check the DEMARC to see that the yellow and black wires are actually connected together tho.. if not, then connect them yourself.. the yellow wire is likely connected to ground, you'll need to disconnect that.. the problem here is that now your phoe wiring is not grounded, so static electricty caused by lightning, etc, has not direct path to ground, and you'll run greater risk of destroying your electronics.. option a) is prefered for this reason..

if you go with b) there is also an option c) if you haven't noticed it, you could put a dual jack in multiple locations, and have one part run the DSL and the other part run you Vonage phone service.. then if you ever want to move your computer and modem and ATA you could do so easily..

see how hard this is to explain? and I know exactly what i want to say and how I'd do it, but saying it here is difficult.. i hope you figure it out ok, please write back here if you need more help, before you wreck your ATA.. you may also PM me if needed for a faster reply..
