Vonage vonage behind a router, with a second voip service on the same cable modem. it might

Vonage behind a router, with a second Voip service on the same cable modem. it might sound like a nightmare or some people, but I've got it working very reliably!

I know people have a lot of trouble getting Vonage to work reliably, especially if you have more then one Voip provider on the same cable or dsl modem, or if you have special conditions where the Vonage device needs to be behind a router. for me, both of these apply.

how it doesn't work: I use Vonage, with the 4 port linksys router that they sent me. my dad uses a lingo device with just an in and out for ethernet. so how's it hook up? from the cable modem to the lingo device to my Vonage device, then split off to all the computers? this is a far from perfect world, never try doing what I just described..

how it does work: I'll describe this the best I can for you. I have a cable modem, that plugs into a simple 4 port netgear hub (not a router). one of the ports get taped off so no one uses it by mistake. my internet provider allows me to have 2 ip addresses. anything plugged into this hub is directly exposed to the internet and will get it's own wan ip. from there, the lingo device plugs into the hub (cut down on as many problems as I can) then, here is the nice part. the last available port on my netgear hub goes into a brazil firewall router. from there, I have a netgear managed switch to plug all the computers into. my Vonage device is plugged into the netgear managed switch, behind the router. the router has been working perfectly for 2 months, and so has the Vonage device.

it seems to be, the problem with reliability issues ISN'T because of a firewall, but with cheap hardware. using the Vonage device's built in router, I was always having trouble. if I went on a file sharing program, it would kick me off messengers on my computer, and the internet would run slower. cheap hardware isn't reliable and can't handle many connections well. using brazil firewall seems to be reliable and powerful enough to have fixed every issue in my network.

what is brazil firewall: this isn't something you can buy at staples or best buy. in fact, it's free.. thank the open source linux community. brazilfw is actually a stripped down linux os with software packaged with it. I'm using an old amd 400mhz computer that I got from the thrift store for $8. you take the hard drive out of it and put a second network card in it, then pop in the brazilfw floppy disk and you're done. plug it in and use it like a normal router with the web control panel.

it might take a little bit of basic computer knowledge to get it set up and working, but they did a good job with the installer software, so that linux experience isn't needed. but the whole point of my post, "10:41:02 up 28 days, 8:39, load average: 0.08, 0.03, 0.00" my router hasn't been restarted in a month, and right there is the proof. my Vonage device has been working just as long without a reboot too. perfect.
