  • A publicly held commercial voice over IP (VoIP) network is known as Vonage. It’s a SIP company providing telephone service via a broadband connection. Based in Edison, New Jersey the company is now situated in Holmdel, New Jersey, in a building that was occupied previously by Prudential. Offering services throughout the United States subscribers, the company in April 2004, expanded into Canada as well as in United Kingdom in January 2005.
In U.S the company promoted itself as "Vonage the Broadband Phone Company" and as "Leading the Internet Phone Revolution." With 2.4 million subscriber lines the company has completed well over 5 billion calls which led the Voice over Broadband or Broadband Phone industry with a high consumer marketing in the United States, Canada, UK and other countries across the world.

The resignation of Chief Executive Officer Michael Snyder on April 12, 2007, helped Jeffrey A. Citron to act as the Chairman and Chief Strategist. To avail this efficient and effective service, customers should be using a "Vonage" branded "VoIP router" or a phone adapter that would connect them to the main router or broadband modem. Additionally, to make calls without any conflicts, an upload speed of 30–90 kbit/s along with a reliable/QoS optimized connection is mandatory.

On May 24, 2006 per share of Vonage was publicly issued at $17 but in the following day it dropped by 23.5% to $13. On 25 March 2007, its closing price was $3.00. An offer to buy shares of the IPO with an announcement through automated phone calls and emails was made. But it was the worst trading day for any IPO in 2006 as the price fell $2.15 or 12.7 percent and closed at $14.85 on the New York Stock Exchange.

The Vonage subscribers are allowed the privilege of choosing any numbers irrespective of their actual residence. Whether its US, Canada or UK, the subscribers can use any area code for their primary line. For the businesses with an international client base, this is really beneficial. In United States, it supports porting a phone number via the FCC's Local Number Portability (LNP), but never offers telephone numbers in each area code.

To access to worldwide telephone network Vonage  the subscriber should have a USB phone adapter which is named "V-phone” that helps in running a softphone application on the computer along with internet access; thus allowing a fully functional and portable telephone. In addition to all its advantages, the service is facing a problem with any VoIP provider’s emergency call issues. Correspondence to the listed phone numbers such as 9-1-1 and e911 in North America lacks availability in this service as the physical location of a caller may not be traceable. Hence all the call maintenance responsibility is depended on the customers themselves.
