tpspeier -

You are correct, in theory. If the QoS worked at all in the Vonage routers, then it would most certainly be better to put the Vonage box out front (and, in fact, with most routers if you turn off DHCP on the other router and run a cable from a LAN port of the RTP300 to a LAN port on the other wireless router, you get one seamless network with wireless AND Vonage all in one network). That probably works about as well as putting the Vonage router behind the other one, assuming your needs are minimal.

However, I have yet to hear a thunderous success story about how the RTP300/WRTP54G provided excellent QoS under any kind of strain, and plenty of gripes about how it doesn't. That, coupled with my own personal experience (and the resulting hair loss from self-extraction in the process) has led me to the conclusion that the RTP300/WRTP54G are GREAT Vonage devices, reportedly the best, but only adequate consumer routers, suitable for situations where you have plenty of bandwidth and don't tend to use it all.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm on vacation here in Florida this week, and I brought my WRTP54G with me as my only router. It's working great, but I don't need QoS since my father runs a 512/3000 connection and the only computer competing with my Vonage line while I'm talking is my company laptop, which doesn't pull a lot of bandwidth.

If your needs are minimal, such as one or two casual surfing computers, then the RTP300/WRTP54G are good routers. However, whenever you can put them BEHIND a different router to save their valuable memory and processor for providing better voice, I recommend doing so.

But, in a light use situation, you can put it either way, really. If the demands are light, cable it either way you prefer and you'll probably get equally good results.

Of course, the ideal, if you need QoS, is to get a router that has it, and configure it properly. :)
