Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 22, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Yesterday was the first day of summer, and a slow day in both the business and technology worlds. Still when it comes to Vonage, no day is a no news day. Today, we'll examine the advice a leading technology website offers to you small business users who would like to distribute your Vonage voice lines to several extensions in your building. We'll look at a popular new Vonage VoIP Forum thread where Vonage subscribers compare how long it took Vonage to transfer their old phone number over to the new service. We'll also tip-toe into the interesting world of voltage measurement. Finally, we'll revisit a thread that we introduced yesterday in which a Forum Member is looking for pointers in how to get his Vonage equipment to work with his laptop over sometimes-balky hotel room switchboards.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 21, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll explore a major step Vonage is taking to boost its customer service efforts, and how that will affect you, the Vonage customer. We'll also look at why so many states, counties and cities would just love to pin a tax on your Vonage phone bill. We'll look a lively Vonage VoIP Forum thread on what to do if a local "800" number blocks your Vonage call, tell you what it means if you hear a series of fast beeps when you pick up your Vonage-connected phone - and introduce you to a Forum Member who is looking for pointers in how to get his Vonage equipment to work with his laptop over sometimes-balky hotel room switchboards.

Vonage Gearing Up For An Interesting New Support Service

On Monday, Vonage announced it would hook up with a customer-solutions platform vendor named Avaya to run some applications that should double the amount of customer service calls Vonage can handle daily.

The Avaya solution runs Avaya's Customer Interaction Suite, which is powered by Avaya Communication Manager IP Telephony software.

OK, we'll skip the corporate speak, and get to the part that will affect you, when you call Vonage tech support in search of a solution to a problem you are having (assuming you haven't also posted your problem t the Vonage VoIP Forum).

This Customer Interaction Suite, reports several sources today, will let Vonage customer support agents start "buddy lists" of other agents who are online or reachable at the moment. This buddy list will have "presence" capabilities to detect when these folks are available, and be integrated with information about their area of expertise.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 20, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll give you a sneak peek-at-a-sneak-peek about how those Vonage ads that you see everywhere are going to change in the near future. We'll also look at how Vonage is fast upgrading their communications infrastructure in Scotland to provide almost 100 percent coverage in that nation by the end of this year. As most of you know, Scotland is a key part of the United Kingdom, a nation for which we are proud to offer our Vonage UK Forum. Today, we'll spotlight how one UK-based Vonage customer addressed their dial-in issues. We'll also see which features Vonage UK Forum members wish that Vonage would offer - but is not as of yet.

Vonage On the Lookout for Models

No, not the kind you see in fashion magazines, those whom-shall we say-place a premium on their attractiveness by avoiding too many fattening foods.

We're talking about those models and commercial actors who, Vonage says in a proposal to the ad agency community revealed on the advertising agency news site Adweek.com this week, could serve as role models for potential Vonage customers. According to the proposals, these customers would be targeted by commercials spotlighting Vonage service as (a) "lifestyle tool(s)."

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 17, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll discover how, like in that great song "Money For Nothing by Dire Straits, Vonage is getting "their MTV." If you've ever wondered what Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron really thinks about Skype, you'll learn that, too. We'll also point you to a new interesting Vonage Forum thread - one in which a Forum member is trying to figure out if he can block certain incoming numbers from dialing his Vonage number. Finally, we'll comb through an older, but recently updated thread with some questions and advice on Vonage's SoftPhone service.

In The Headlines

Vonage All Over MTV's "Real World"

Have to admit, I watch MTV a good bit less than I did, say back in the 1980s. But I just might have to tune in more, once the 16th season of MTVs "Real World" kicks off this coming Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern/9 p.m. Central. A quick definition for those of you even more out of touch with the world of MTV than I am these days: The Real World features exploits of a group of twenty-something housemates recruited by MTV, who not only share a common dwelling, but share all their hang-ups and more than a few of their urges.

And if they want to call the outside world, the newest Real World cast will use a Vonage Videophone to do so. Based in Austin, Texas, this season's host house will also feature Vonage as the home page on the house PC, Vonage mouse pads next to the PC, and "Vonage's "People do Stupid Things" advertisement as the house PC's screen saver.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 16, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll tell you why Vonage just may be sending you a sticker that you will be required to place on your phone. You'll learn how your Vonage subscription is helping people find work in one New Jersey community. We will bring you a peak inside a famous free online encyclopedia used by that defines and profiles just exactly what Vonage is. We'll also point you to two new interesting Vonage Forum threads - one in which a Forum member can't seem to get the voice mail message lights working on his phone when he receives a Vonage voice mail, and the other that describes one Vonage's subscriber's problems calling cell phone numbers in one of North America's largest cities.

Vonage May Be Sending You A Sticker To Place On Your Phone

We've already pointed to articles that have described Vonage CEO's Jeffrey Citron's skepticism that all VoIP providers will be able to guarantee absolute E911 access to all subscribers by the time the Federal Communications Commission's headline takes effect in September.

If Vonage, for some reason, falls a few subscribers or a few days late, well, then, expect Vonage to send you a sticker to place on your phone. As ZDNet IP Telephony blogger Russell Shaw reports, (BTW: one of the few VoIP sites that I always find time to read, and you should also) this sticker isn't a marketing gimmick, but one required by the FCC in a recent memorandum telling VoIP access providers such as Vonage exactly what they need to do to follow these E911 rules.

Here's the FCC talking:

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 15, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll bring you up to speed on some fast-moving developments in the world of VoIP-developments that may well affect Vonage subscribers and Vonage as a company, too. We'll hear some thoughts from Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron on how the growth in the number of Vonage subs-now 700,000 plus and counting-is causing the company to look at customer service and installation procedures in revised ways. We'll also point you to a new Vonage Forum thread in which a Forum member is looking for tips on using two Vonage-Linksys RT31P2s with the same Internet connection. Finally, we'll take a peek at the Vonage UK Forum, and see what types of questions some Vonage users in Britain are asking.

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll have some additional details about that big Vonage-Linksys router giveaway promotion, including corrected information about how it works, and even an article analyzing why Vonage is doing this. We'll also point you new Vonage Forum threads in which Forum members are looking for tips on how to diagnose and correct a possibly bad router and slow Internet connection speeds that seem to have started when they hooked up their Vonage service.

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll tell you about a big Vonage-Linksys router giveaway promotion that might get you out of the house and on the road to your big-box retailer. Speaking of driving, we will also give accolades to a Vonage-sponsored racecar driver with a famous name, who did well in a big race on Saturday. We'll also point you to a new Vonage Forum thread in which a new Forum member seeks advice on why his Vonage calls seem to be cutting off, and another new user's quest for the same call quality for inbound calls as he has been getting on outbound calls.

Vonage, Linksys Offer Free Router for Trade-In

Starting yesterday, and for the next six weeks, several retailers are letting you trade in any router for a Linksys WRT54GP2 wireless-G Broadband router configured for Vonage service.

To make things happen, you'll go to a Best Buy, Circuit City or Comp USA and plunk down $129.99 for the router. At checkout, you will be issued a printed rebate form. Then, once you get home, you've got two tasks:

Go online and sign up for Vonage, and then find your old router and send it in to Linksys.

After several weeks, you'll get your check.

If you want to save gasoline, you can also buy your Linksys router on Amazon.com.

And of course you can always just sign up online here and receive a free router and your second month of Vonage service free also, no waiting for the rebate.

Vonage VoIP Forum Digest

June 10, 2005

By Daniel Connor

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll tell you about a county official in suburban New York who has taken it upon himself to warn his constituents about deficiencies in Vonage's E911 service. We'll also how to tell you how to watch a streaming video in which two pillars of the Digerati take Vonage out for a spin. We'll also point you to new Vonage Forum threads about the best combination of router/ATA and phone, and introduce you to the experiences of one Forum member as he navigates the sometimes choppy waters of phone number portability.

Citing Vonage, NY County Official Cautions Constituents to "Beware of" Internet E911

In his periodic letter to constituents, Nassau County (N.Y.) Deputy Presiding Officer Roger Corbin alerts consumers that some Internet phone services may not include enhanced 911 access.

Corbin singles out Vonage's failure in Houston to speedily route a 911 call to emergency dispatchers as an example of VoIP's E911 vulnerabilities. "People have a reasonable expectation that when they dial 911 from their phone they will be connected to an emergency operator and they will be located," Corbin says. "But unfortunately, that is not always the case."

Corbin acknowledges the Federal Communications Commission's ruling mandating VoIP E911, but says that despite the ruling, this would be an opportune time to inform Nassau County residents of the conditions as they currently are.

Welcome to today's edition of the Vonage VoIP Forum Digest.

Today, we'll tell you about why key Vonage execs view the Federal Communications Commission's looming VoIP E911 ruling as impossible to meet by September 19, and also look at a new study that will compare Vonage call quality to some of its rivals. We'll also look at a couple of interesting Vonage Forum threads that try to help a member who is having difficulty getting TiVo to work with his Vonage setup, and another thread that quite literally, wonders if Vonage's new ad campaign is rocket science.

Citron On E911 120-Day Compliance: Ain't Gonna Happen

Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron said yesterday that in his view, the "hundreds and hundreds" of logistical issues involved in universal deployment of FCC-mandated E911 access by Vonage and other service providers will keep such access from being deployed within the 120-day deadline given by the FCC on May 19.

Citron said that a key issue is what to do with rural subscribers. While these might be subscribers on the fringes of metro areas, they may still live in areas that are hard to get to and expensive to equip. "If you have one rural customer in one market, what do you do," Citron asked. "And there is no guidance inside the order to figure that out."

The Vonage chief added that because Vonage and other VoIP providers want to avoid a rural-urban access divide, additional discussions with the FCC are in order.
