IP Telephony Shows Signs Of Going Mainstream

October 18, 2004

By Patrick Mannion

Manhasset, N.Y. — The Fall 2004 Voice on the Net Conference in Boston this week expects to draw twice as much interest as it did last year, one of many signs that suggest voice-over-Internet Protocol technology is surging.

Two moves last week — Linksys' delivery of VoIP adapters to Verizon and Office Depot's plans to sell the VoIP phones and services of VoiceGlo — also point to IP telephony's growing ubiqui.

Linksys' delivery of VoIP adapters to Verizon and Office Depot's plans to sell the VoIP phones and services of VoiceGlo — also point to IP telephony's growing ubiquity.
Analysts predict good times for carriers offering VoIP services as subscribers look to make low-cost over-the-Net calls and gain access to a range of services and features.

Still, technical and regulatory hurdles could keep VoIP an add-on service — not a full phone-line replacement — for the foreseeable future.

Vonage To Provide R.I. Subscribers With E-911

Vonage In Print News

Wireline

October 15, 2004

By Staff

VoIP provider Vonage said it's now able to provide R.I. subscribers with E-911 location service, a step one FCC official said was "a terribly exciting development for public safety."

However, Vonage CEO Jeffrey Citron said R.I. was a unique case, noting that both the regulatory and technical structure of the 911 system will make it challenging to provide E-911 to other districts. Because R.I. owns the selective router for 911 and has only one public safety answering point (PSAP) for the entire state, there were fewer complications to bring E-911 online, Citron said Thurs. Since most states have numerous PSAPs and most 911 selective routers are controlled by ILECs, achieving access to the 911 system is difficult. Citron said each state could change rules on accessing the 911 system, but having to appeal to each state would be tedious and could produce inconsistent results, Citron said.

Vonage Talks About 911 Advancements

October 15, 2004

Vonage, an Internet phone service provider, and emergency telecom specialist Intrado say together they've conducted successful trials of an advanced means of making emergency phone calls using the Internet.

Details of the work in Rhode Island, and the two companies' future plans for it, will be unveiled Thursday in Washington, D.C., where Vonage will also discuss its participation in a major industry-led forum to improve the nation's 911 system.

While they have been hailed for costing up to 30 percent less than traditional dialing plans, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services often do not include the ability to dial 911. The reason, mainly, is that VoIP calls are routed over the Internet, while most emergency calling centers are only capable of receiving calls using older circuit-switched telephone technology.

R.I. E911 Call Leads To Company's Answer

October 14, 2004

By Timothy C. Barmann

Vonage, one of the nation's largest Internet phone companies, plans to announce today that, as a result of working with Rhode Island's e911 center, the company has found a solution to a key drawback to Internet telephone service.

The state agency and Vonage have scheduled a news conference today to announce that it has devised a way to handle emergency 911 calls made over the Internet. The announcement will be made at the National Press Club in Washington D.C.

"That solution essentially allows our customers to dial 911 from a Vonage line," said Jeffrey Citron, chief executive officer of Vonage, based in Edison, N.J.

"We know where you are and know where we are supposed to send the call," Citron said in a telephone interview yesterday.

Firm Says Technology Can Pinpoint Location

October 14, 2004

By Leslie Brooks Suzukamo

Fans of Internet telephone service, known as Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP, have long raved about how much cheaper it is than regular telephone service, but the lack of true "enhanced 911" emergency calling from an Internet phone has caused many potential customers to balk.

In Washington, D.C., today, though, Vonage, a relatively tiny technology company that is the nation's leading Internet phone service provider, says it will announce that it has finally licked that problem.

That could boost adoption of VoIP among American consumers and here in Minnesota, where Vonage offers Internet phone service along with far bigger and more established phone companies like Qwest Communications International and AT&T, all without E-911 service so far.

Internet Protocol Is Shrinking The Planet And Revolutionizing The Way We Live And Work. Mark Blanchard Looks At The New Frontiers In Voice, Video And Data Communication

October 13, 2004

By Mark Blanchard

When Leonard Yakobovits is on the road, he takes more than his work with him -- he takes his office too. With e-mail, a webcam and his latest technology tool, an Internet telephone service, the Concord, Ont.-based entrepreneur can do business whenever he wants to and wherever he is.

"It's great," says the president of Dezco Holding & Trading, a distributor of health, beauty and other products to dollar stores across the country. "You can communicate locally from anyplace in the world. When I go to a trade show, I take a little box with me, plug it in at the hotel and I am in business with a 416 area code. I can still use my own number and long-distance plan from wherever I am."

That little box is a broadband voice gateway from Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. Its TalkBroadband service, like those offered by other voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) telephone companies, connects to a standard wired or cordless phone and a high-speed Internet cable or DSL modem.
