Internet Calling: Should You Answer? Ready Or Not

November 1, 2004

By Rik Fairlie

With Today's Cell Phones capable of doing just about everything but shampooing your poodle, the landline phone has become a quaint, sleepy little device. But Voice over IP (VoIP) telephone service is now being marketed in retail tech stores, and some believe it will place a wake-up call to the traditional telecommunications market.

VoIP leader Vonage recently connected with Linksys (www.linksys.com) and Netgear (www.netgear. com), and is selling the home-networking heavyweights' phone adapters from its Web site. Staples, Office Depot, Circuit City, and CompUSA are also selling the phone adapter/VoIP service packages. On-the-shelf exposure like this could consumerize the technology, but only if VoIP is ready for consumers.

Look out for further announcements in the next few days.

In Internet Phone Calls, Broadband's 'Killer Application'

October 27, 2004

By Chris Oakes

PARIS - If you happen to live in France, or have visited the country recently, a current promotion may well have caught your attention. Free, one of the country's biggest Internet service providers, has been offering consumers extra fast Internet access, along with a cable-like package of TV channels.

But Free, a subsidiary of France's Iliad Group, has thrown in one especially striking addition: unlimited free telephone calls throughout France. To start un-metered domestic dialing, the customer plugs a standard telephone into the "Freebox" that comes with the service.

The flat-rate price for the entire "triple play" package - delivered via the service's single DSL, or digital subscriber line, connection - is 29.99, or about $38, per month.

Vonage Adds London To Number Mix

October 26, 2004

By Staff

A month after giving its customers the ability to add virtual numbers from Mexico City to their accounts, Vonage is now adding London to the mix.

The New Jersey-based VoIP service provider is now allowing its customers to select London-based virtual numbers – numbers that ring on a Vonage primary line – for $4.99 per month.

Vonage becomes the second North American VoIP company to offer London numbers to its customer. Lingo, a subsidiary of Maclean, VA-based Primus Telecommunications, began offering numbers from London and some 17 other non-North American cities, in August for $9.95 per number.

Wireless, Medical Gear, Biotech Are Hot VC Sectors; $4.3 Bil Put In Startups In Q3; Top recipient In The Quarter Was Voice-Over-Internet Firm Vonage, Getting $105 Mil

October 26, 2004

By Brian Deagon

Investments by the venture capital industry held steady in the third quarter.

At its current rate, VC investment is on pace to finish the year close to where it did last year, at almost $19 billion, says a new report.

Investments of $4.3 billion in the quarter were the same as last year, but below the $5.9 billion invested in the second quarter.

Still, it fell within the $4.2 billion and $5.9 billion range seen every quarter in the past two years.

"The venture capital market continues to stabilize," said Dave Furneaux, a partner at Kodiak Venture Partners, which has $700 million under management. "The trend toward better capital efficiency is increasing."

Investments in Venture Capital
Cooled in the Third Quarter

October 25, 2004

By Ann Grimes

It's official: After ticking upward for five consecutive quarters, investments in venture capital slowed during the third quarter, according to the Quarterly Venture Capital Report released today by Ernst & Young and VentureOne, a unit of Dow Jones & Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal.

The report found that $4.56 billion went into 467 deals, compared with $5.4 billion for 557 deals in the second quarter, down 16%. However, so far this year, $15.4 billion has been invested in 1,536 deals, according to the VentureOne database, up from the $13.4 billion that was invested in 1,492 deals through the third quarter last year.

GPS-WiFi Combo Could Make VoIP E911 Capable, Industry Speakers Say

October 25, 2004

By Staff

BOSTON - GPS chips could enable VoIP end-user devices for E911, but this would take time and might need Wi-Fi to make it work, VON participants told us here. However, VoIP industry speakers warned the FCC that E911 shouldn't be required of their services.

Using GPS as a location technique for VoIP E911 would take a couple years because of high costs, speakers said. Henry Sinnreich, MCI distinguished member of engineering, estimated a GPS chip would add about $20 to a VoIP phone's cost and said manufacturing companies don't yet see it as a good business decision. Vonage Exec. Vp-Operations Michael Tribolet agreed: "GPS chips are expensive. Over time, when the price comes down, as soon as it fits to the price point that's consumer friendly, it's easy to integrate it in the box." He said most GPS chips were $12-$15. "I think when it gets to a $10 to $8 range, we'll be able to implement them into the box."

Designs On Wi-Fi

October 25, 2004

By Paul Travis

Two service providers revealed plans last week to combine services so travelers can easily make wireless voice calls over the Internet from more than 11,000 Wi-Fi hot spots.

Boingo Wireless Inc., which has a network of 11,000 Wi-Fi hot spots, is working with Vonage Holdings Corp., a provider of voice-over-IP phone service, to market a package that includes Vonage's SoftPhone VoIP service and Boingo's Wi-Fi hot spots. Mobile workers will be able to use Vonage's X-PRO SoftPhone from Xten Networks Inc. linked to PCs to make calls via Boingo's Wi-Fi locations.
