Venture Capitalists Begin To Up The Ante
Startups Collect About $20 Billion In 2004

January 1, 2005

By Todd Wallack

Investors are slowly starting to bet more money on startups.

Venture capitalists poured roughly $20 billion into fledgling companies around the country last year, up 7 percent from 2003 and the first time venture investment has risen since the tech bubble burst in 2000, according to preliminary figures from PricewaterhouseCoopers' MoneyTree Survey.

In 2003, young private companies raised $18.7 billion in venture money. The accounting firm called the $1.3 billion increase a slight uptick.

Soldiers Take Advantage Of Free Phone Service From Vonage

December 29, 2004

By Staff

More than 200,000 phone calls were made in 2004 by U.S. soldiers in Iraq to loved ones back home, thanks to the free phone service provided by Vonage Holdings Corp., a provider of broadband phone service.

Vonage plans to continue this program throughout 2005.

"Vonage has noticed an increase in calls during the holiday season and is glad we have been able to give our troops the ability to call their families to say happy holidays and tell them how much they are missed and wish them a great New Year," stated Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman and CEO of Vonage Holdings Corp.

Mergers, Dot-Com Resurgence Marked 2004

January 3, 2005

By Staff

2004 brought a new sense of optimism to the tech industry — even the beleaguered dot-com field.

Google's (GOOG) initial public offering got investors excited about the Internet again. And with another record holiday season, eBay (EBAY) and other e-commerce sites proved there was plenty of money to be made online.

Still, the tech industry remained cautious. Many firms continued to slash jobs and cut costs. And consolidation was the order of the day.

Two pairs of cell phone service providers agreed to merge.

Venture Capital Goes Up

December 30, 2004

By Jim Hopkins

SAN FRANCISCO — Reflecting the tech industry's recovery, venture-capital investing is ending its first up year since the boom ended in 2000.

Venture capitalists, who invest in young businesses on behalf of pensions and other institutions, plowed an estimated $20 billion into start-ups this year, say preliminary figures from the authoritative MoneyTree Survey. That's up from $18.7 billion in 2003, and it's the first annual increase in four years.

"We clearly have turned the corner," says Tracy Lefteroff of PricewaterhouseCoopers, which tracks VC investing for the survey.

Court: Minnesota Can't Regulate Internet Calls As Phone Service

December 29, 2004

By Staff

Minnesota can't regulate calls through cyberspace as it does calls through traditional phone lines, a federal appeals court ruled.

The Tuesday order upholds a lower-court ruling and is a triumph for fledgling companies like Vonage Holdings Corp. of Edison, N.J., which provides Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.

The loser in the ruling by the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission.

The PUC had argued that VoIP companies were providing phone-like service and therefore should be regulated as phone companies. But those businesses said they provide an information service rather than a telecommunications service.

VoIP converts the sound of a voice into packets of data, sends them across the Internet, and reassembles them into sound on the other end of a call.

ENN Year In Review 2004: Let's Talk Broadband

December 30, 2004

By Staff

At the end of 2003, the broadband situation in Ireland was not good. The Republic lagged in broadband take-up compared to most of the developed world, and Eircom-bashers insisted that the incumbent was to blame. A full 12 months later, the key industry metrics have risen, but the rhetoric is much the same.

In 2004, most talk of telecoms in the Irish market revolved around one issue: the rollout of ADSL, or broadband internet over the copper wires going to most homes and businesses. On an almost monthly basis, a new report from a government advisory body, the EU, a research firm or an industry group would hammer home the same message: most of the developed world leads Ireland by a wide margin in terms of broadband rollout and take-up -- a mantra that had been repeated in certain circles throughout 2003 and 2002.

To Stay Relevant, CRTC Must Move Decisively In 2005

December 30, 2005

By Mark Evans

There's a role for regulators but duties are evolving
As Canada's telecommunications regulator heads into 2005, it faces a litany of challenges at a time when the $32-billion industry is poised to go through extraordinary change.

Among the most pressing issues the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission must address are whether/how to regulate Internet telephony; finding a replacement for David Colville, who retired recently as vice-chair, telecom; dealing with a heavy backlog of regulatory decisions and applications; and the start of a the next price-cap regime.

Vonage Is Winner In Court Debate

December 30, 2004

By Staff

Vonage, a provider of telephone service via the Internet, scored a significant victory this week when a federal court ruled the state of Minnesota cannot regulate it as a regular telephone company.

"Vonage is extremely pleased with the victory,” the company said in a statement provided to Local tech Wire. “The 8th Circuit federal appeals court has granted us a permanent injunction against the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission's order regulating Vonage as it would a monopoly wireline phone company.
