Vonage Chief: Nobody's Sweeping Us Under

January 5, 2005

By Ben Charny

Three years after opening for business, Vonage has become the largest provider of voice over Internet Protocol services in the United States. Much of the credit goes to CEO Jeffrey Citron, an acerbic-tongued Staten Island native whose rough edges have shaped the public persona of this fast-growing start-up.

Along the way, however, the scrappy company has earned its fair share of rivals. Some competitors speculate (sotto voce, of course) that Vonage's 15 minutes of fame are about up and that the company is doomed to be elbowed aside by far larger cable and telephone companies. Whether that's an accurate prediction or just wishful thinking, there's no question the industry is evolving fast. More-established companies are finally getting aggressive with their own Net phone services--and that's likely to raise challenges for Vonage.

CNET News.com recently spoke with Citron about the changing face of the VoIP industry and what it might portend for his company.

Vonage Launches UK Service At Under £10 A Month For Unlimited Calls

January 5, 2005

By Alan Burkitt-Gray

US VoIP operator Vonage has launched into the UK, initially just through its UK website.

It is the company's first presence outside North America, where it has 300,000 lines in service. The basic residential offering in the UK is priced at £9.99 ($18.85) a month giving unlimited calls to all wireline phones in the UK and Ireland, with free extras such as caller ID, voicemail and call forwarding. This is cheaper than the comparable Premium Unlimited package in the US, which gives unlimited calls for $24.99 a month, but UK customers will have to pay extra to call mobile numbers. International rates start from £0.02 a minute to the US and Italy.

CES : Vonage To Offer Wireless Phones

January 5, 2005

By Grant Gross

Vonage Holdings Corp. on Tuesday announced it has partnered with two companies to offer wireless telephone handsets for its VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) service.

Both phones will eliminate the need for Vonage customers to buy VOIP adapters to connect with traditional, non-VOIP phones. Vonage in the past has marketed the adapters, but not VOIP phones, said Louis Mamakos, Vonage's chief technology officer.

Vonage, which provides VOIP service to residential and small business customers, announced it will begin offering a VTech Holdings Ltd. cordless VOIP telephone through retail outlets by mid-2005.

Wireless VoIP Phone From Vonage

January 5, 2005

By Staff

UTStarcom today announced the debut of its F1000 portable Wi-Fi handset, which will be offered to Vonage customers in Spring/Summer 2005.

UTStarcom's F1000 Wi-Fi handset untethers consumers from their traditional phone lines, allowing them to make calls from anywhere there is a Wi-Fi hot spot -- at home, at work, around the town; in airports, coffee shops, and hotels; and even internationally. The F1000 handset, which has received U.S. regulatory approval, provides all the features and functionality of a VoIP terminal adapter together with a standard cordless telephone, but has the advantage of letting the user talk from any available Wi-Fi access point instead of just the base that they have at home.

Vonage's VoIP Subscribers Pass The 400,000 Mark

January 5, 2005

By Staff

VoIP provider Vonage said Wednesday it has signed up 400,000 subscribers for its Internet telephoning service, more than doubling its base in less than six months.

The firm reported it had added 115,000 lines in the fourth quarter of 2004 alone.

"Vonage has set the benchmark, proving its value proposition to a marketplace starved for full-featured, cost-effective alternatives to the incumbent local exchange carriers," said Jeffrey Citron, chairman and CEO of Vonage Holdings Corp., in a statement.

Vonage Goes Mobile

January 5, 2005

By Jay Wrolstad

Internet phone company Vonage is developing a mobile phone that uses Wi-Fi technology, with the goal of providing VoIP service to the growing number of people embracing wireless broadband systems.

Vonage has partnered with IP networking specialist UTStarcom to create the F-1000 handheld, enabling calls on 802.11b networks. Delivery of the phone is expected during the spring or summer, with the price yet to be determined.

Wi-Fi Access in Demand

"We are seeing increased demand for a Wi-Fi phone, which appeals particularly to people that have the equipment in their home or office, as well as travelers who can access hotspots at hotels, airports and other areas," Vonage spokesperson Jamie Serino told NewsFactor.

Adding mobile service boosts the company's portfolio of products and potentially broadens the customer base, he said. The Vonage-UTStarcom partnership also offers retailers an opportunity to increase sales and expand into a new category by leveraging Vonage's position in the VoIP market and UTStarcom's expertise in next-generation telecommunications, according to Serino.

Vonage Takes VoIP Over Wi-Fi Into Consumer Mainstream

January 5, 2005

By Al Senia

Amid the barrage of interesting technologies and new products scheduled for introduction at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is an intriguing notion: The marriage of VoIP and Wi-Fi technologies.

Consumer VoIP pioneer Vonage has struck an alliance with IP phone provider UTStarcom to introduce a portable Wi-Fi handset, the F-1000, configured with Vonage's phone service. The product, which will be available nationwide by June, is designed to offer Vonage subscribers, who pay around $25 monthly for service, mobility across 802.11b networks. The price for the mobile phone hasn¹t been determined, but it's expected to be around $100. (Vonage might even give the phone away for free to subscribers who sign a long-term service contract.)

Skype Upgrades Service; Vonage Launches In The UK

January 5, 2005

By Matt Whipp

Skype has announced version 1.1 of its Internet telephony service, adding new cosmetic flourishes and improved instant messaging features to put it better placed compared with other messaging rivals.

While Skype had always touted its voice service as its key feature, critics pointed to its rather spartan instant messaging functions compared with rivals.

In version 1.1, Windows users at least get the ability to start chat rooms of up to 50 people. Additional new features in Skype v1.1 include improved contact list management and presentation, new mini avatars alongside highlighted contacts and new tray alerts that help users monitor their contacts and messaging.

In other news, Vonage, the leading US Internet telephony provider announced it had doubled its subscriber base to 400,000 and was working with a handset builder to offer a WiFi-enabled handset that can hook up to available wireless hotspots. The company launched its service in the UK 28 December and has teamed up with the likes of Tesco and Carphonewarehouse for its sales channel, according to some reports.

Vonage Offers VoIP Mobile Phone

January 5, 2005

By Andrew Orlowski

Voice over IP pioneer Vonage is to market a mobile phone handset for around $100, the company announced today.

Existing subscribers may be offered the handset, the F1000, for free. The handset could be used at Wi-Fi hotspots, but given the chaotic state of the infant Wi-Fi market - with a paucity of hotspots and few roaming agreements - Vonage's moby is more likely to take the place of the cordless home handset.
