Voice Over IP Comes To Landline Phones In The UK

January 6, 2005

By Stuart Miles

Broadband phone services firm Vonage has quietly launched a Voice over IP service in the UK that can run directly through a users landline phone handset.

The system works by providing a convenient phone adapter/router which converts analogue signals to digital signals which plugs into a broadband connection. A standard telephone can then be plugged into the adapter so that when a call is made or received the signal is converted to digital and routed through a high-speed DSL or cable modem across the Internet and back through a traditional phone network to the receiver’s phone – providing low cost and high quality phone calls anywhere in the world.

UK To Get Broadband VoIP - Over Wi-Fi

January 7, 2005

By Peter Judge

VoIP service provider Vonage has launched in the UK. The initial consumer voice-over-broadband service will be followed in Spring or Summer, with a Wi-Fi phone that can be used at public hotspots on the same account, and an SME offering that handles up to 50 lines through normal PBX equipment.

Vonage subscribers pay £9.99 per month for unlimited local and national calls, with low international call rates. The user plugs a conventional telephone into an adapter (which Vonage provides) that routes the call onto the user's ISP connection, so both incoming and outgoing calls go over the Internet. For £18.99, a small business package includes a separate dedicated fax number.

Minnesota To Appeal FCC Vonage Ruling
Decision Prohibits States From Regulating VOIP

January 6, 2005

By Grant Gross

WASHINGTON - The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) plans to appeal a November decision by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) prohibiting states from regulating VOIP (voice over Internet Protocol) services, such as those offered by Vonage Holdings.

The appeal of the FCC's ruling would be the second appeal by a state public utilities commission after California filed a petition for review with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in December. The Minnesota appeal, to be filed with the Eighth Circuit appeals court, may be filed by the end of the week, said Burl Haar, executive secretary of the Minnesota PUC. The commission directed its lawyers to begin the appeals process earlier this week.

Vonage Launches In U.K.

January 6, 2005

By John Blau

Consumers and small businesses in the U.K. can now take advantage of the same inexpensive Internet telephone service that Vonage Holdings Corp. offers its customers in North America.

Vonage, which calls itself the largest provider of voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services in the U.S., officially launched a new Net telephony offering in Britain on Thursday, according to company spokesman Jamie Serino.
"Our U.K. Web site actually went live over the weekend," Serino said. "Our first customers signed up within hours — which is encouraging considering that we hadn't even begun to market the service."

Vonage has made a name for itself in the U.S. and Canada by selling a low-cost phone service. That, in a nutshell, is exactly what the company aims to achieve in the U.K., Serino said.

The prices speak for themselves: for £9.99 (US$19) per month, customers can make unlimited phone calls within the U.K. Small businesses are offered the same all-you-can eat phone service for £18.99 per month.

Vonage Brings VoIP Service To The UK

January 6, 2005

By Sylvia Carr

In its first move into Western Europe, Vonage is 'getting a feel' for the market with the release of its VoIP products in the UK.

US-based voice-over-IP company Vonage has opened for business in the UK, its first European market, with options for both home and small business users.

Home users pay £9.99 per month for unlimited local and national calls, low international rates and features such as caller ID and voicemail; the £18.99 small business offering adds to this a fax line.

Both can be ordered from the company's UK Web site, which launched on Tuesday.

Vonage offers voice services over a standard phone line and requires broadband and the installation of a hardware adapter to convert between analogue and digital signals.
The launch went off with little fanfare, though a company spokesperson said a full marketing push is expected later this year.

Vonage Passes The 400,000 Subscribers Mark

January 6, 2005

By Staff

This is an important step for Vonage, and for sure it's far from over. Their aggressive marketing campain seems to pay. Network devices manufacturers are signing deals and their service is starting to be sold in retail, an excellent sign that the technology is becoming usable by most people.

There is still work that needs to be done to make the installation easy, but it's getting there.

Vonage Tops 400K Users; Dialpad Launches Cheap Service

January 6, 2005

By Staff

Vonage says it topped 400,000 subscribers to its VoIP service. The company added 115,000 lines in the first quarter of last year, and it ended 2004 with 390,000 lines –300,000 of them added in 2004.

Meanwhile, Vonage has yet another competitor in the form of five-year-old VoIP house Dialpad Communications, which until now has specialized primarily in using VoIP as a dial-around technology using phone cards and the like.

Vonage Phones In Hot WiFi Plans

January 5, 2005

By Cynthia L. Webb

Upstart Internet telephone company Vonage made its mark on telecom in 2004 and isn't backing down in 2005. The company this week said it will make chatting on the go even easier for consumers with WiFi technology, a move that could spook traditional mobile phone carriers in the same way as Internet phones are doing to the local Baby Bells.

The New Jersey-based Vonage yesterday said it will offer its customers a portable WiFi phone "that can make calls over the Internet at homes or at public WiFi hot spots. For Vonage subscribers, the phone could amount to a kind of limited-use cell phone that would cost nothing extra.

Several smaller companies have introduced Wi-Fi phones in the USA at prices ranging from $130 to $750. But Vonage's move would mark the first mass-market rollout of the device at a lower price, probably around $100," USA Today reported in advance on Monday. Vonage is touting its new product and other services at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
