Vonage Launches Local VOIP Service In The U.K.

January 24, 2005

By Anita Jain

Vonage Holdings Corp., the largest independent voice-over-Internet provider in the U.S., has launched its service in the United Kingdom for local residents. The U.K. is the only country besides Canada where the Edison, New Jersey company's VOIP service is available for domestic use.

Vonage has appointed Kerry Ritz managing director of the company's U.K. operations. Most recently, Mr. Ritz served as director of customer strategy for Hutchison 3G Ltd., the first third-generation mobile operator in Europe.

One of the first companies in the U.S. to launch VOIP service, Vonage has successfully gone head-to-head with large telecom and cable companies, like Verizon Communications and Time Warner Inc. The company has 400,000 subscribers in the U.S. and Canada.

VoIP Services Beat Regulation - For Now

January 20, 2005

By Sean Doherty

The state of Minnesota lost in its second attempt to convince a federal court that it should be allowed to regulate Vonage's voice over IP service (DigitalVoice) over broadband connections and the Internet. In an earlier case, the state failed to convince the FCC that DigitalVoice is like conventional phone services, and therefore subject to state tax and regulatory filings. The rulings give VoIP over broadband service providers-and their users-cause to celebrate, but the shouting isn't over yet.

In a November 2004 ruling, the FCC found DigitalVoice to be an Internet service and not a conventional phone service. But those differences may not hold true for other VoIP providers. The FCC also found that voice over the Internet could not be "cost effectively" separated into interstate and intrastate communications, which would make it possible for states to tax in-state calls. But if a cost-effective method arises, a tax may follow.

Vonage's Citron: Can You Hear Him Now?

Hi! The Net Is Calling
Vonage's Citron: Can You Hear Him Now?

January 31, 2005

By Rana Foroohar

Jan. 31 issue - Like the technology he's pushing, Jeffrey Citron, the 34-year-old CEO of Internet phone company Vonage, has a tendency to shake things up. In the 1990s, armed with little more than a high-school diploma, he founded two businesses, including Datek Online Holdings, and helped pioneer the tools for computerized daytrading on Wall Street (and attracted the ire of the Securities and Exchange Commission, which fined him $22.5 million for allegedly misusing the new system). In 2000, he began pouring his own money—$70 million and counting—into Vonage, an upstart telephone company that is now revolutionizing this $1 trillion industry.

The idea behind Vonage's technology is breathtakingly simple: on the Internet, voice is just another form of data. So what, then, is the point of dedicated phone networks—or even telephone companies, for that matter? By capitalizing on the Internet, Vonage has been able to undercut phone companies and steal their customers—more than 400,000 Vonage subscribers pay as little as $24.99 a month to make unlimited telephone calls. Vonage has become the fastest-growing and largest provider of Internet phone calls in the United States.

Vonage Helps VoIP And Wi-Fi Form A Union

Tying The Knot

February 1, 2005

By Mike Hogan

With a new generation of routers, VoIP and Wi-Fi form a union to benefit your business.

Want the productivity boost and cost savings that both VoIP and wireless networking deliver? Now you can get a helping of both in a single piece of hardware. Wi-Fi and VoIP providers are working together on a new generation of Wi-Fi routers that set you up for internet calling and wireless networking at the same time. A good example is the Vonage Internet Phone Starter Kit, which includes Linksys' Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54GP2).

The WRT54GP2 makes the usual broadband modem connection for wireless internet access and 54Mbps data transfers among a dozen or so PCs. But it also has two phone ports and the electronics necessary to let you make internet calls using a traditional telephone.

The co-branded Linksys/Vonage package includes the router and a CD-ROM to walk you through network setup and phone service. Its materials are well-illustrated, easily followed and backed up by good technical documentation. But expect at least one call to tech support--with all the variations in desktop configurations, there's always some hitch configuring a wireless network.

Venture Capital Rebounded Nicely In '04
$21b Spent Is Up 10.7 From Previous Year

January 24, 2005

By Robert Weisman

Reversing three years of declining investments, venture capital firms plowed nearly $21 billion into emerging companies in 2004, according to the MoneyTree survey being released this morning.

Venture financing, a key barometer of the entrepreneurial economy, totaled $20.9 billion nationally last year, up 10.7 percent from the $18.9 billion invested in 2003 and the first annual increase since 2000. There were 2,876 venture deals last year, compared to 2,847 the prior year.

New England remained the second-largest US venture capital market, after Silicon Valley, with companies in the region raising just over $3 billion in 2004, up 6.6 percent from the $2.8 billion raised a year earlier.

Edison-based Vonage, the nation's leading supplier of Internet phone service to consumers, raised more than $100 million in venture capital last year, more than any other New Jersey company.

Vonage, which has more than 300,000 subscribers and is adding both customers and employees, took the lead among New Jersey technology firms that seek venture capital to turn their ideas into products and services.

Despite Early Glitches, Internet Telephone Technology Is Emerging As A Land-Line Alternative

January 24, 2005

By Kathryn Balint

You might have heard of an emerging telephone technology that transmits calls over the Internet instead of traditional phone networks.

The technology, known as voice-over-Internet protocol, or VoIP, allows callers to save money on their long-distance bills.

Some VoIP services have reached the point where the sound quality is indistinguishable from those made on a plain old, circuit-switched telephone line.

But others, especially those that send telephone calls over the public Internet alongside e-mail and Web traffic, generally aren't as reliable as traditional phone service. At times, calls won't go through, just like how e-mails get delayed or Web sites don't load fast enough.

Venture Capital Reports: Investing On The Rise Again

January 24, 2005

By Staff

After years of declining investments, venture capital (VC) firms have begun pumping money into start-up high-technology companies, according to different surveys.

The MoneyTree Survey, released Monday, reported that nearly $21 billion was invested in start-up and emerging companies in 2004. The survey was prepared by the PricewaterhouseCoopers accounting firm, Thomson Venture Economics, and the National Venture Capital Association.

VC investments had declined to the $18.9 billion invested in 2003, according to the MoneyTree survey, which noted that 2004 was the first increase in VC investing since 2000--the year the telecommunications and high-technology bubble began deflating.

VoIP Availablity

January 23, 2005

By Michael Levensohn

In October, Vince Copello of Warwick canceled his phone service and DSL, and pulled the plug on his satellite television feed. Now he has more channels than he can count streaming into his high-definition living room TV.
He has high-speed Internet access that's three times as fast as his old DSL. And he has a phone plan that gives him unlimited long-distance calls.

For all this, he's spending $40 less each month than he used to.

"You know when you're retired, you have to watch your money," Copello says.

In October, Copello and his wife, Sandy, signed up for Cablevision Communication's "triple play" – digital TV, broadband Internet and Internet-based phone service – with an introductory price of about $90 a month, guaranteed for a year.
