 Leave The Internet Alone

Vonage In Print News

February 22, 2006

By Staff

The Internet is known as the information highway for good reason. Users can log on at will and travel to any site of their choosing. And along the way, they are likely to see more than a few billboards advertising this product or that. But now there's a movement afoot to turn the cyber highway into a toll road. Congress must not allow that to happen.

Net Neutrality (Or Back To The Future)

Vonage In Print News

February 21, 2006

By Mark Lloyd

The Senate is considering whether to limit the ability of high-speed Internet providers to restrict access to their networks. The need for such legislation arises from the determination by the Federal Communications Commission that advanced telecommunications services ("broadband") were not really telecommunications services, but were instead "information" services. As explained in a previous column, these semantics relieve broadband providers from the obligation to provide equal service to everyone who uses the system. This was called Common Carrier Regulation. Today the debate has been given the catchy term Net Neutrality.

Former FCC Chairman Powell: Net Neutrality 'Doing Great'

Vonage In Print News

February 20, 2006

By Paul Kapustka

BOULDER, Colo. -- Even as the debate about Network Neutrality heats up and spawns headline-grabbing rhetorical fury, the man who started it all -- former FCC chairman Michael Powell -- can kick back, relax, and say that his so-called Internet Freedoms are "doing great."

Two years removed and a few rows back from the same place where he first outlined the "freedoms" from his bully pulpit, the now-private-citizen Powell sees the current debate as mostly a "scrum" between big businesses like Verizon and Google, with consumers as the immediate beneficiaries.

Use Internet Phone Plan To Cut Costs

Vonage In Print News

February 20, 2006

By Eric Gwinn

Now is the time to hang up that landline and switch to Internet phone.

It may sound futuristic, but using an Internet phone service is as simple as plugging the phone you have now into an adapter, then plugging that adapter into your broadband network and calling any other phone in the world, even cell phones.

Why, you ask, would anyone do this? Because it's cheap.

Saving money is the key to Internet phone calls. Because Congress doesn't tax the Internet the same way it taxes phone lines, calls over the Internet are cheaper than traditional calls.

Denver Residents Can Now Say “Buh-Bye” to BellSouth and Hello Vonage

Vonage In Print News

February 19, 2006

By Jason Saine

Vonage America, a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings Corp., a leading provider of broadband phone service, last week announced that almost all of its customers have basic 911 service and a majority of them have Enhanced 911 - a feature that automatically associates a physical address with the calling party’s telephone number.

In just 90 days, Vonage has equipped an additional 1,061 locally run calling centers, in over 360 new counties, with E911 capabilities, which brings the total number of calling centers within the 911 service area to over 3180.

As Voice over IP (VoIP) continues to grow in popularity, you can expect to see a raft of new related products hitting the shelves over the next few months. Vonage is keen to promote its VoIP service as a viable alternative to traditional landline calling and is about to launch the Wifi Phone in conjunction with handset manufacturer Utstarcom - it’s actually been available in the US for some time now.

The Wifi Phone is about the same size as most mobiles and features a Nokiastyle button layout.

 Talk Gets Cheap

Vonage In Print News

March 1, 2006

By Wilson Rothman

Much to the telephone company's chagrin, there are now plenty of ways to get phone service for a fraction of the price you're used to. The cable industry is one new competitor, but the cheapest alternative is over the Internet.

Most Net phone services work just like regular phones do. You get a local number (in many cases, your old one). Sound quality and reliability are equal. The only difference is that you plug your phone into an adapter that connects to a cable or DSL modem. This does limit the number of places where you can set up your phone, but cordless users should have no problem.
