Oscars Goodie Bags Have Something For Everyone

Vonage In Print News

March 2, 2006

By Staff

Because celebrities don't make enough money, because they don't get enough free stuff, because they surely could use more spa treatments, the marketing minds in Hollywood created the Oscar gift basket. Each year, the A-list presenters and performers get bagfuls of pricey loot, making us mortals feel even more poor -- and getting free product placement in newspapers worldwide. But we're not bitter. No, we're feeling magnanimous enough to look kindly on this swag, realizing that it might serve as a giant hint. Some stars, after all, have specific needs these days. Henceforth, some gift basket goodies and their most deserving recipients:

 Vonage Lines Top 1.5 Million

Vonage In Print News

March 1, 2006

By Staff

Vonage Holdings Corp. said Wednesday that it has exceeded 1.5 million lines in service.

That's not surprising, given that the number of VOIP customers has more than tripled, according to data released by the Telecommunications Industry Association released this week.

According to the TIA, customers of residential VOIP services topped 4.2 million in 2005 and will grow by 43.9 percent to 18.0 million users in 2009.

Oscar Night: Time To Brag About Swag

Vonage In Print News

February 28, 2006

Inside the gift basket
The official Oscar gift basket was born in 1989 as a way for the academy to thank presenters and performers. Since then, it has evolved into a marketing bonanza in which companies bid six months in advance to provide products for the basket. The value has grown from $20,000 in 2002 to about $110,000 last year. USA TODAY’s Karen Thomas peeks inside:

Vonage - What's In This Year's Oscar Goodie Bag?

Vonage In Print News

February 27, 2006

By Bill Zwecker

Oscar show presenters and performers don't get a fat paycheck for their efforts, but the luxury "goodies" given them instead by the Motion Picture Academy likely excite the actors just as much.

"It's better than Christmas," a former Oscar presenter told the Sun-Times on Friday, requesting anonymity. "They really go out of their way to find gifts to impress people that are not easily impressed."

I am intrigued by what might be called cottage-industry globalization, perhaps because I just ran into an example.

Globalization has two aspects. One is the rapid shifting of high-tech work -- software development, circuit design -- to India and China. The other is the use of technology to outsource nontechnical jobs.

Recently, I introduced a friend, a bright computer type in Northern Virginia, to a Mexican woman who teaches Spanish to foreigners in Mexico. Woody had gone to Mexico as a tourist, loved it and decided he wanted to learn Spanish. Back in Virginia, the lowest price he could find for one-on-one instruction was $50 an hour. Not good.
