Reuters Summit-Operators Brace for 'Voice Over Internet' Race

May 27, 2005

By Astrid Wendlandt and Santosh Menon

PARIS (Reuters) - Sooner or later, most phone calls will be made over the Internet, telecoms executives predicted this week.

But while the transition will be a boon for consumers, who will save money, it will be bane for telecoms operators, who will be forced to lower prices and change their business models.

"Phone companies probably wish VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) never came about," Mike Fries, chief executive of UnitedGlobalCom, Europe's biggest cable operator, said at the Reuters Telecoms, Media and Technology Summit in Paris on Wednesday.

"Today, they have the choice between lowering their prices or launching their own VoIP service, and I am sure they would rather not be in this situation."

VoIP breaks voice traffic into fast-moving packets that can be sent over the Internet in the same way as e-mails. It allows less expensive calling than traditional phone services, because it does not require a dedicated circuit for each connection.

Emergency Connection

May 25, 2005

By Staff

With lawmakers eyeing a major rewrite to telecommunications laws this Congress, it seems like a good time for Vonage, a company that provides telephone service over the Internet, to staff up in Washington, D.C.

The New Jersey-based provider has tripled the size of its D.C. office by adding Stephen Seitz, formerly director of government affairs at the National Emergency Number Association, and Frank Cavaliere, deputy legislative director for Sen. George Allen (D-Va.).

Frank Cavaliere Heading to the Washington Office of Vonage.

May 26, 2005

By Staff

Frank Cavaliere, deputy legislative director for Sen. George Allen, R-Va., is heading to the Washington office of Vonage. Cavaliere will serve as vice president of federal regulatory affairs, handling Internet and telecommunications issues, and he expects to deal with the House, Senate, and FCC.

Cavaliere has dealt with all kinds of technology issues for Allen, a member of the Senate Commerce Committee. He also worked on the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign and for the CapNet PAC. Cavaliere believes Vonage, a broadband phone company that offers voice-over Internet protocol service, is "really the company that's at the center of the reason to re-examine telecommunications laws, primarily because the service that they're providing ... doesn't fit the old rules."

Vonage Driver Andretti Has Powerful Sponsors

What's in a name? For Marco Andretti, plenty

May 27, 2005

By Jay Hart

INDIANAPOLIS | As Marco Andretti's crew wheeled his orange No. 26 car down pit road at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a track official commented, ''He's got some pretty powerful sponsors.''

Count Vonage, Motorola and Hershey's among them, all banking on an 18-year-old with exactly one semi-big-time race under his belt. That they've chosen him only magnifies the obvious — there are high expectations for the next Andretti and, fair or not, there are going to be skeptics.

VoIP Service For Smaller Firms

May 26, 2005

By Dave Bailey

US broadband voice over IP (VoIP) provider Vonage has rolled out its UK service, offering two price plans: Residential Unlimited for £8.50 + VAT a month and Small Business Unlimited for £16.16 + VAT a month.

Vonage UK managing director Kerry Ritz said the service had two main attractions: "Customers can choose their own phone number and take that number with them, so effectively it's a number for life; and secondly, you can start to use virtual numbers. For instance, you could have a second number corresponding to a US number, which US users could call and it would be billed as a local call for them."

Vonage Car Driver Marco Andretti - New Star, Familiar Name

Vonage In Print News

New star, familiar name

May 24, 2005

By Anne Proffit

He's just a wee bit over 18 years of age and hasn't even earned his high school diploma from Notre Dame HS in Nazareth, PA yet but Marco Andretti is clearly on the road to racing stardom.

Sure it helps to have a father named Michael and grandfather like Mario Andretti, but Marco's been earning his way through the ranks since the age of ten. Feeling extremely pressured when he got involved in go-karting, Marco stepped aside for a bit before realizing this was definitely his calling, not somebody else's dream for him.

And so he's progressed through championships in karts, in Barber Dodge national competition to where he stands today.

This weekend Andretti makes his first professional start on the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway 2.5-mile oval in the third annual Menards Infiniti Pro Series Futaba Freedom 100. This event also marks Andretti's first oval race, making it doubly important for the young man.

Marco is driving the #26 Vonage Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone entry in the Futaba Freedom 100 this Friday, May 27th, a car entered by his family and supported by Keith Duesenberg Racing, which has a good deal of success at this venue.

How to Phone Home

May 24, 2005

By Suzy Buckley

Using the phone in your hotel room is like playing a game of Russian roulette. Even if prices are posted, you’re never quite sure of the outcome – at least, until you reach the checkout desk.

There are a handful of ways, however, to beat the system. For instance, many cellular-phone carriers now have GSM-based technology – so your cellphone will often, but not always work abroad.

Here are five other ways to save:
