Think About That For a Minute

June 9, 2005

By Steve Effros

Commentary by Steve Effros
Of Ducks And 'IP' TV (Part I)

I'm confused (yes, I realize there are some readers who are saying that's not a surprise). But I'm getting very frustrated because I keep getting different answers to what I think is a pretty straight-forward question: what is "IP" TV?

Try it. Ask folks in our industry, ask telephone people, the programmers, Silicon Valley types. Ask engineers, Wall Street guys, the consumer press. I guarantee you'll get lots of different answers.

Cogeco launches digital phone service

June 9, 2005

Cogeco Cable is bringing digital telephone service to local residents.

Launched yesterday in Burlington and Oakville, the Cogeco service offers subscribers to the company's cable TV and high-speed Internet services a $44.99-per-month package of telephone services.

It's all based on the voice-over-Internet protocol, or VoIP, which allows phone conversations to be transmitted over high-speed Internet connections instead of phone lines..

 Reporter Uses Vonage While Traveling

This Normal Life

June 7, 2005

By Brian Blum

I was recently interviewed by a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle. He was in town for a few months to try to get the “real story” behind the headlines. He’s been a regular reader of this column and figured I might be able to share some insights.

Besides which, he offered to take me out to lunch, his treat. We went to Olive and I ordered this chicken dish in a mango-pineapple-coconut sauce which was to die for. I can talk for hours if you give me a good meal.

“So what do you do on an ordinary day?” the reporter asked me.

Vonage Teams With Uniden In The Cordless Phone Game

Vonage In Print News

Vonage, Uniden Going Cordless

June 6, 2005

By Staff

Vonage Holdings Corp. and Uniden America Corp. will team up to develop a broadband cordless-phone system, the two companies said Monday.

Vonage said it will enable the Uniden "UIP1869V" -- which offers a corded base unit and is expandable up to 10 cordless handsets -- to deliver a state-of-the-art voice-over-Internet-protocol solution.

The UIP1869V is based on Texas Instruments Inc.'s "TNETV1060" VoIP-gateway chip set, and it features a telephone base unit that will plug directly into a customer's broadband-connection or router, eliminating the need for a stand-alone adapter and telephone.

Reliable Internet Service: A Requirement For VoIP

Vonage In Print News

What Does It Take To Go VoIP?

June 2, 2005

By Elizabeth Millard

One of the primary requirements for a VoIP system is reliable Internet service. Although this seems obvious, some companies do try to implement VoIP without increasing their broadband pipe, said Louis Holder, executive vice president of VoIP firm Vonage.

It is official: VoIP is all the rage. With the potential cost savings combined with the boom in service plans and monitoring tools, it makes sense that the strategy finally has found its foothold.

For home users, the switch from traditional telephony to the IP-driven type is as easy as -- well, a phone call. They merely have to talk to a local cable provider and usually can have VoIP within a day or two.

But for enterprises, the undertaking is vastly more complex and costly, involving equipment, training, monitoring tools and other components.

Alarm.com Rings Up Vonage For Alliance

June 3, 2005

By Jeffrey Sanders

MCLEAN, Va.-- Alarm.com and Vonage entered into a co-marketing partnership in a move to not only increase business opportunities and stave off service limitation concerns, but also bridge the gap for central stations monitoring accounts where landlines do not exist.

Both companies offer services built on emerging technologies, such as broadband and wireless networks, that offer cheaper alternatives to pre-existing applications. But at the same time require a certain amount of handholding when it comes to adoption.

Through the partnership, Vonage can refer potential customers to Alarm.com that would like to drop their landline telephone service, but still require a stable means to communicate alarm signals. For Alarm.com, the deal provides a steady stream of customer leads.

Bundling isn't to consumers' advantage: Vonage says customers should not lock into long-term

June 3, 2005

By Mark Evans

Jeff Citron, chief executive of Vonage Holdings Corp., is the consummate salesman. When he tells you Internet telephony is going to take over the world of communications, and Vonage is going to be the dominant player, remember where he's coming from.

That said, Mr. Citron raised an interesting notion during a speech earlier this week at the Canadian Telecom Summit when he suggested multi-services bundles are nowhere near as attractive as carriers and cable companies make them out to be. The way he sees it, bundles that lock in consumers for two or three years in exchange for a modest price reduction stifle innovation and choice.

CEO Praises Regulator's Decision on VoIP: 'Pro-Competition'

June 1, 2005

By Kevin Restivo

Jeff Citron, head of Vonage Holdings Corp., said yesterday the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission's decision to regulate incumbent carriers offering Internet phone service will spur adoption of the fledgling technology in Canada.

In a speech at the Canadian Telecom Summit in Toronto, Mr. Citron said the federal telecom regulator has created a "pro-competition" environment in Canada that will boost consumer confidence because companies other than Bell Canada and Telus Corp. can offer Internet phone service over the long term.

Vonage Expected to Cross 1 Million Subscriber Mark Before Year-End

June 1, 2005

By Jeffrey Hodgson

TORONTO (Reuters) - Vonage Holdings Corp. will easily cross the 1 million subscriber mark before year-end, the head of the fast-growing Internet phone company said on Tuesday. Vonage chief executive Jeffrey Citron said the closely held firm currently has more than 700,000 subscribers, and was adding about 15,000 a week.

"When you look at our pace of growth in that first quarter and what we're publicly stating in the second quarter, you forecast that out and Vonage will easily clear the million customer mark before the end of the year," he told Reuters on the sidelines of a telecoms conference in Toronto.

The U.S. firm offers its service through broadband Internet connections using voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP. Customers plug their phones into specially designed Internet adapters.
