Vonage Offers Wireless Upgrade

June 13, 2005

By Staff

Vonage Holdings Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc.’s Linksys division are teaming up on a trade-in program.

Subscribers who sign up for Vonage's voice-over-Internet-protocol service can trade in their used routers for Linksys “Wireless-G Routers” with two phone jacks for broadband telephony (model “WRTP54G”) free-of-charge after rebates.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone who has been thinking of cutting the cord to get a great deal on Vonage and a free wireless router, as well," Vonage senior vice president of sales Matthew Deatrick said in a prepared statement.

Vonage: Spending As Fast As It Can

June 20, 2005

By Roger O. Crockett

Enticing customers to switch from their tried-and-true phone service to a newfangled brand costs loads of money, and Jeffrey A. Citron is on one heck of a spending spree. Citron, the 34-year-old chief executive of telecom startup Vonage Holdings Corp., has been burning millions in venture funding to market Vonage's Net-based phone service. His message is simple: Users with broadband connections can save on their bills by hitching their phone to the Net -- through a Vonage hookup. It's called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, and customers like the economics. Vonage subscriptions have jumped 63% this year, to 700,000. Some 15,000 more jump on board every week.

The trouble for Vonage? Big cable players such as Time Warner (TWX ), Cablevision Systems, and Comcast are starting to gain traction in the same market. And they're chipping away at Vonage's industry-leading share, which was 37.5% in the first quarter, according to Halpern Capital. What's more, telecom giant Verizon Communications (VZ )just launched its own VoIP service, and SBC Communications (SBC ) is expected to plunge into the market in coming months, once its merger with AT&T (T ) is final. By yearend, the total VoIP market is expected to top 3 million. By 2008 it'll be 19 million, according to researcher IDC.

Vonage & Linksys Offer Trade-In Program

June 13, 2005

By Staff

For a limited time, customers can trade-in their used router – any brand, any model – for a Linksys Wireless-G Router with 2 Phone Jacks for broadband telephony (WRTP54G) for free (after rebates), when they sign up for Vonage’s broadband phone service.

How the Program Works:

1. Purchase a Wireless-G Router with 2 Phone Jacks for Vonage (WRTP54G) at participating retail stores and e-commerce sites. Receive a $10 rebate from Linksys and a $20 rebate from the participating reseller.

2. Activate Vonage’s Internet phone service. After 90 days, receive a $50 activation rebate from Vonage.

3. Mail in your old router to the Linksys fulfillment center. After 90 days of service, receive the additional $50 trade-in rebate from Vonage.

Three Reasons Why Vonage-Linksys Free Router Promo Is A Solid Idea

June 13, 2005

By Russell Shaw

There's a lot of strategic insight behind today's announcement from Vonage and Linksys that they will be giving away Vonage-configured Linksys WRTP54G Wireless Broadband Router to new Vonage subscribers through July 23.

First, here is how the deal will work. You either go in to a Circuit City, Best Buy or CompUSA, and plunk down $129.99 for the router/access point device, or order the unit online on Amazon.com. If you buy the unit at one of those brick and mortar retailers, you get a rebate slip. The electronic equivalent of this rebate slip is produced via Amazon as well.

 Vonage Taking VoIP Service Overseas

Vonage Taking Internet Telephone Service Overseas

June 13, 2005

By Staff

Purpose: Make overseas telephone calls for the price of local phone service.

The lowdown: Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, has become a hot alternative to traditional telephone service. It's cheaper and can travel with you. I decided to take one company's product with me on a recent trip to Malaysia.

Verdict: Vonage, one of the early VoIP providers, sent me a phone adapter about the size of a deck of cards. All I needed was a broadband connection and a phone. I checked ahead and found that my first hotel offered broadband for 50 ringgit (about $13 US) a day. I also brought a cheap phone and Linksys travel router so I could split the Internet line with Vonage and two laptops. Setup was simple. Plug the hotel's Ethernet cable into the router and a second cable from the router to the Vonage box. I plugged the phone into the Vonage box. No muss; no fuss. It worked on the first try.

Vonage, Cisco Team Up In Wi-Fi Giveaway

June 12, 2005

By Ben Charny

Purchase of the Linksys model number WRTP54G, which costs about $130, is required; then Vonage will distribute rebates to people who sign up for its phone service and trade in old wireless routers, Vonage said.

A Wi-Fi access point, which showers 300-foot-long zones with wirelessly available Internet access, isn't necessary to use VoIP; rather, any wired cable modem or digital subscriber line will do.
