Is Your Future Telephone Also Your Computer?

July 1, 2005

By David Radin

Americans love bargains, so any service that saves them money is likely to be a big winner in their eyes -- especially if the newer service has bells and whistles that make it functionally more appealing.

That may explain the recent growth of VoIP -- short for voice over Internet Protocol -- telephone services.

These services use the technology of the Internet to decrease the cost of phone service from what traditional phone companies typically charge.

Internet phone service can be had for as little as $15 a month for 500 minutes of service and $25 for unlimited usage.

Live 8 As An Advertising Vehicle

June 30, 2005

By Abbey Klaassen

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Saturday's multiple-concert Live 8 event, the elaborate sequel to Bob Geldof’s 1985 Live Aid, is expected to draw the world’s largest broadcast audience and, while the focus is on world poverty, marketers such as AOL, Nokia and Volvo hope a few consumers take notice, too.

The three companies are global sponsors of the anti-poverty entertainment effort that involves 10 concerts, 100 artists, a million spectators and a projected 2 billion viewers.

Travel Made Easy

July 1, 2005

By Kimberly Davis

One of the biggest challenges of traveling are the inconveniences that go along with it. There are, however, products available to alleviate some of these annoyances. From wrinkled clothes and motion sickness to having to ask for directions and paying pricey phone bills, these innovative gadgets will take the frustration out of travel so you can enjoy your trip.

1. For the traveler with a weak stomach, the ReliefBand for Motion Sickness is the only drug-free and FDA-cleared electronic treatment for nausea caused by motion sickness. Non-invasive and reusable, it works before and even after symptoms have kicked in by generating gentle, intermittent pulses of electric signals to divert nausea. $109.95, available at The Sharper Image.

Voice of Reason

June 30, 2005

By Staff

This week, Vonage delivered an adapter that enables users to make inexpensive Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls through their existing landline phones rather than the standard way of using a PC and a headset. The device, available via Staples stores or from the Vonage website, plugs into a standard phone and the Ethernet connection of a broadband router.

Arm Wrestling With the Giant Telcos in the CEO's Chair: Jeffrey Citron of Vonage

June 29, 2005

It may have looked easy for Vonage, the broadband phone company that has been tearing up the rules of the US telecommunications market over the past couple of years, but Jeffrey Citron, its impossibly young looking chief executive, insists it was not.

Web Phones Hit The Road

June 28, 2005

By Larry Magid

CAIRO, EGYPT - I'm more than 7,000 miles from home but when I called my wife from my hotel I didn't have to dial an area code and the hour-long call didn't cost a penny. Instead of paying more than $1 a minute to call long distance or $2.50 a minute to use my cell phone, I placed the call via the Internet. And, thanks to Vonage, neither Patti nor I had to sit in front of a computer to talk on the phone.

What's more, the service doesn't just let you make outside calls. You can receive calls as well. After Patti and I spoke, the phone in my hotel room rang with a call from a friend of mine who didn't even know I was out of the country. He called my regular home/office line, which rang here in Cairo.

Advertisers Pour More Money Into the Big Screen

June 27, 2005

By Jane L. Levere

Vonage plans to use this character in
an animated spot in movie theaters.

HATE being stuck in a movie theater with no choice but to watch advertisements on the big screen?

Get used to it.

Advertisers like these spots, and have been buying more of them. Movie ads are one more alternative to television spots, which are losing favor as TiVo and other digital video recorders make it easier for viewers to zap them.

The World of Business Just Got Smaller

June 27, 2005

By David Grossman

Did you ever tally up your expenses after a trip and get that sick feeling when you realize your telephone calls cost more than your hotel room? I was very disappointed recently to learn my cell phone would not work in Asia. I received more bad news when my calling card provider told me it would cost me $2.30 a minute to call the U.S. from Asia. Even after scouting out a variety of calling card options, the lowest rates I could find would still be $.35 a minute, or $21 an hour. That's a lot of Yen, Won and Bhat.
