Vonage Unveils 'Naked DSL' Research

July 19, 2005

By Staff

Following research of the UK Broadband market, Vonage, a provider of broadband services has published research showing that 2 out of 3 of UK broadband customers want a wider consumer choice for their telephony service and a GBP672 million pound surcharge is paid each year to BT for line rental. This is the case even if the customer does not subscribe to a BT Broadband service. As a result Vonage is pressing for 'Naked DSL' in the UK. This is where a customer has the ability to subscribe to broadband and telephony services independently of each other.

VoIP Will Be "Our Hottest Product," CompUSA Exec Says

July 18, 2005

By Russell Shaw

According to CompUSA director of merchandising Brian Woods, VoIP just may be the hottest item on the 289-Superstore chain's shelves this coming Holiday Season.

"The adoption rate has been very, very quick over the last several months," Woods told metro Dallas technology business leaders at a luncheon late last week.

ContextWeb Intros Graphical Display CPM Ads

July 18, 2005

By Mike Shields

Contextual keyword ad seller ContextWeb, following the lead of search giant Google, is extending its contextual ad portfolio to include graphical display ads to be sold on a CPM basis.

Generally, contextual keyword ads are comprised of text links which are placed on a network of content sites based on their relevancy to each particular site's content. Typically, these ads are sold on a cost-per-click pricing model, similar to search-based keyword ads.

Recently, Google's AdSense, the leader in the category, began selling context-based display ads on a CPM basis, geared for brands that are less focused on direct response metrics.

ContextWeb Adds Image Ads

July 18, 2005

By Kevin Newcomb

ContextWeb today introduced contextually targeted image ads with CPM pricing to its text advertising network, which is sold on a cost-per-click basis.

The company hopes image ads will open its network to a market beyond the more traditional, direct marketing-focused advertisers that use text ads, said Andy Jacobson, SVP of business development and sales.

The image ad service, in beta since the beginning of the year, allows advertisers to choose content categories within ContextWeb network to target image ads against. Text ads have run on the network since it launched in September 2004.

All rich media formats and third party ad management platforms are accepted, executives said. Several of ContextWeb 1,000 advertisers have already run image ads, including Delta Airlines, Tickle and Vonage.

And Now. The Battle for Cyberspace

July 17, 2005

By Claude Robinson

With Digicel emerging as the undisputed winner in round one of the liberalised telecommunications market in Jamaica by dominating the mobile telephony sector, Cable & Wireless now appears to be moving aggressively to take round two, the coming battle for Internet-based services.

At least, that's my reading from the presentations and roll out of services at the Cable & Wireless Horizon 2005 exhibition at the National Arena in Kingston last week, which attracted hundreds of technology buffs and those of us who are just curious about the exciting new world of media and communications.

Sonoma, California -- Pablo Donoso, of Santiago, Chile, went wire-to-wire in his Cristal Beer/Andersen Walko Racing Mazda to record his first series victory in Round Six of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear today at Infineon Raceway. Donoso, under fire from series points leader Raphael Matos in the closing laps would pull away to a 2.055 second victory over fellow series rookies Marco Andretti and James Hinchcliffe, when Matos suffered a mechanical problem on the final lap.

Internet-based Phone Service May Be A Hot Holiday Gift

July 15, 2005

By Terry Maxon

Telephone service over the Internet probably will be CompUSA Inc.'s hottest sales category in the 2005 holiday season, a senior CompUSA official said Friday.

Brian Woods, executive vice president of merchandising for Dallas-based CompUSA, said he expects sales of products offering voice over Internet protocol service to jump to 18,000 to 25,000 a month in November and December from about 3,500 a month now.

"It is the fastest-growing category at CompUSA. Why? In consumer lingo it is extremely cheap," Mr. Woods told attendees at a Metroplex Technology Business Council luncheon in Richardson.

VoIP Gaining Trucking’s Interest

July 15, 2005

By Sean Kilcarr

Eric Pell will tell you that switching from a traditional phone system setup to one based on computer lines and the Internet came down to a simple, two-word reason: saving money.

As director of information systems for Gainey Transportation Services (GTS), a 1,200-truck carrier based in Grand Rapids, MI, moving to a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology allowing the carrier to make telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line is going to save GTS an estimated $60,000 per year in phone line, maintenance and long distance fees. That’s a big deal in an industry currently beset by high fuel prices and other rising costs, he said.

Consumers Push Firms To VoIP

July 18, 2005

By Dave Bailey

The uptake of voice over IP (VoIP) systems by consumers looks set to force more large companies to adopt VoIP, according to new research into data and usage patterns by global IT services company Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC).

Until now, firms deploying VoIP have largely done so to cut call charges, said James Walker, CSC's director of managed network services for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "But now (consumer VoIP services) Skype and Vonage have driven a radical shift in the voice market. It's an interesting trend in consumer-led innovation."

This Normal Poetry

July 15, 2005

By Brian Blum

I was recently interviewed by a reporter from the San Francisco Chronicle. He was in town for a few months to try to get the "real story" behind the headlines. He's been a regular reader of this column and figured I might be able to share some insights.

Besides which, he offered to take me out to lunch, his treat. We went to Olive and I ordered this chicken dish in a mango-pineapple-coconut sauce which was to die for. I can talk for hours if you give me a good meal.

"So what do you do on an ordinary day?" the reporter asked me.
