Venture Capital Firms Putting More Big Bucks Into Late-Stage Rounds

July 27, 2005

By Brian Deagon

U.S. venture capital investments rose 18% last quarter from the year-ago quarter to $5.8 billion, putting the field on track for a solid year.

So says the quarterly MoneyTree venture survey released Monday by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the National Venture Capital Association and Thomson Venture Economics.

A marked increase in later-stage funding propped up last quarter's tally. Later-stage deals, typically funding that comes after a third funding round, hit $2.4 billion last quarter, a four-year high.

Vonage Launches E911 Fallback Center

July 27, 2005

By Staff

Vonage, rushing to meet Federal Communications Commission mandates for the provision of E911 to voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) customers, is setting up an E911 “fallback center” to handle 911 calls from its VoIP customers who, for any reason, can’t be automatically routed to the correct public service answering point (PSAP). TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) will run the center for Vonage.

The VoIP venture looks to be a new business for TCS, whose specialty has been E911 services for the wireless industry.

Seed Funding Making A Comeback

July 27, 2005

By Alorie Gilbert

Venture capitalists in the U.S. bumped up financing in the second quarter for early-stage start-ups as well as for more established ventures, but kept overall funding in line with the two-year quarterly average, according to a report released on Tuesday.

Venture investors poured a total of $5.8 billion into 750 companies throughout the period of April, May and June, according the MoneyTree Survey, a report assembled by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Thomson Venture Economics and the National Venture Capital Association.

Pimp That Phone, the Silly Season is Here

July 27, 2005

By Guy Daniels

As we head towards August, the newswires are starting to fill up with stories that, quite frankly, wouldn't get a look in during the rest of the year. Yes, the silly season has started. So, to mark this important occasion, an appropriate story has been selected. We start though, with the words that preface such stories on TV stations around the world.

And finally....

VoIP operator Vonage has signed up four "celebrity technology contestants" to compete in its "Pimp That Phone" competition.

Vonage Adds Motorola VOIP Gateway

July 27, 2005

By Staff

Just days after Vonage signed VTech to provide a cordless VOIP phone, the VOIP provider agreed to partner with Motorola to supply a home VOIP gateway.

Like other Vonage routers, such as the WRT54GP2 from Linksys, the new Motorola VT2442 VOIP router will accept an Ethernet input, handle two phone lines, and contain four outgoing Ethernet ports, to the WRT54GP2's three. An "advanced firewall" is also included, which includes stateful packet inspection, a feature the WRT54GP2 lacks, according to Vonage support personnel.

Jersey Firms Make Venture Capital List

July 26, 2005

By Beth Fitzgerald

Two New Jersey companies -- the Internet telephone company Vonage and the pharmaceutical startup Esprit Pharma -- made the list of the top 10 U.S. companies funded by venture capitalists during the second quarter.

Edison-based Vonage raised $199.9 million while East Brunswick-based Esprit drew $63 million, and they illustrated the "barbell" shape of the VC market in the quarter, which was heavily weighted toward startup companies and mature firms.

TCS Signs Vonage to VoIP Service

July 24, 2005

By Staff

The nation's leading Internet telephony service has moved closer to offering a complete emergency calling service, signing an agreement with Telecommunication Systems Inc. of Annapolis.

The agreement Monday between phone pioneer Vonage and TCS to provide call routing and steering services is an important component in meeting an Internet phone emergency calling requirement enacted by the Federal Communications Commission in May. The TCS service is based in Seattle.

Internet telephony, also called Voice over Internet Protocol, uses high-speed network connections to deliver voice messages in packets, just as e-mail is delivered. The technology is cheaper and provides many new features, including mobility.

According to Infonetics Research's report, WiFi Phones Biannual Worldwide Market Size and Forecast, 143,000 Wi-Fi VoIP handsets were sold in 2004 adding up to $54.7 million in revenue. Of that total $6.7 million in revenue was from dual-mode Wi-Fi/cellular handset sales.

Vonage, VTech Team For Cordless VOIP Phone

July 22, 2005

By Staff

Vonage and VTech said this week that they have teamed up to take the VOIP service cordless with an integrated system.

Although normal corded and cordless phones can be plugged into a Vonage-enabled router to allow VOIP service, the new IP-8100-2 phone from VTech will integrate the Vonage service directly into the phone. The phone will cost $149.99, not including a $50 rebate that can be mailed in after 60 days of the Vonage service.
