Software VC Sweet Spot

July 28, 2005

By Tamina Vahidy

Venture capitalists poured $5.8 billion into 750 companies in Q2 2005, according to the new MoneyTree Survey conducted by PwC, Thomson Venture Economics, and the National Venture Capital Association.

Of this kitty, life sciences got the biggest share, $1.5 billion, with software coming in just behind at $1.3 billion. Telecommunications had $562 million, Voice-over IP (VoIP) specialist Vonage getting a $200 million chunk of that. Financial services came in last, with $340 million, but the vast majority of that ($311 million) came from a single deal, the largest of the quarter in any industry.

Ensign's Telecom Bill Protects VoIP but Also Monopolies

July 28, 2005

By Rich Tehrani

I like the idea of having more competition and less regulation. My concern is that we have cable lines and phone lines built over the decades from a monopoly position in the market.

I haven’t had a chance to digest it fully, but so far the important points of this bill are that it protects VoIP calls. It claims to help the market by taking away arbitrary and historical regulations that arbitrarily hamstring one competitive technology over another.

Networking Start-Ups’ Comeback Continues

July 27, 2005

By Cara Garretson

Three of the ten largest venture-capital investments made during the second quarter were in networking or telecommunications companies, continuing the renewed interest among VCs in funding a sector that has lagged dramatically in the last few years.

The second largest deal of the quarter was sealed by VoIP service provider Vonage, which attracted $200 million in its sixth financing round to date, according to the MoneyTree Report, a quarterly survey of venture capital investments performed by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Thomson Venture Economics and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA). A financial services firm cut the largest deal of the second quarter.

Internet Phones Call on Wi-Fi

July 27, 2005

By Jeff Bertolucci

Internet phones are going wireless. Internet phone vendors have merged wireless networking with voice over Internet Protocol phone service to create the Wi-Fi VoIP phone. This promising--if somewhat rough around the edges--technology brings wireless calling to Net phones.

A Wi-Fi VoIP phone is a handset that looks a lot like a cell phone, only it sends and receives audio signals via a wireless network. It works within Wi-Fi's transmission range, which isn't very far. In our tests, Wi-Fi VoIP calls abruptly disconnected whenever we ventured 70 to 100 feet from our wireless router.
