Companies Jockey For Position In Revised Telecommunications Law

July 30, 2005

By Scott Lanman

Ted Stevens entered the U.S. Senate in 1968, when the Baby Bell phone companies still belonged to American Telephone and Telegraph Co. and it cost $5 a minute to call his home state of Alaska from Washington. Today, Stevens, 81, is the Senate’s longest-serving Republican and the chairman of the Commerce Committee. He faces a new reality: The United States has more mobile phones than landlines, cable television providers are selling phone and Internet service, and phone companies are preparing to offer TV service.

Easier Internet Calls, But Only With Vonage

July 29, 2005

By Adam Baer

Customers of phone services like Vonage, which convert voice signals into digital data and send them over the Internet, enjoy a number of advantages over people with traditional phone lines, like cheaper calls and fancy voice-mail and call-forwarding features. But getting started with what is known as VoIP, or voice over Internet protocol, is still a little daunting. The VTech IP-8100-2 broadband phone system can make things easier - if your VoIP company is Vonage.

Good Old Cordless Phones Get Chummy With Cell Phones

July 29, 2005

By Ed Baig

Before the cell phone became truly ubiquitous, most people's idea of a wireless phone conversation was using their cordless phone. It really was the liberating product of its day. You could wander from the house with a handset that was — gosh! — hundreds of feet removed from a base unit plugged into a wall jack.

Over the years, numerous innovations have improved the old cordless phone. Interference has been reduced. And ranges have been extended. Still, people seem to care a lot more about breakthroughs in that other, sexier mobile handset, the cell phone.

Industries Laud Ensign Bill As Recognition Of New Reality

July 28, 2005

By Drew Clark

The telecommunication and technology industries reacted favorably -- as had been expected -- to deregulatory telecom legislation introduced Wednesday by Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev. But the bill also garnered some words of praise from the cable industry.

"This bill recognizes that the world has changed and consumer-driven markets work better than those managed by the government," said Peter Davidson, senior vice president of Verizon Communications. "The Ensign bill puts consumers first."
