Andretti Gets Ready for Kentucky Speedway

August 8, 2005

By Staff

Marco Andretti will make his second career start on an oval next weekend at the Kentucky Speedway as the teenage son of Michael Andretti goes for his third Menards Infiniti Pro Series win in just four starts.

After winning from pole position at the street circuit in St Petersburg and the road course at Indianapolis, the 18 year-old will be looking for his first finish on an oval after a late race crash knocked him out of his first career oval start, also at Indianapolis in the Futaba Freedom 100.

US FCC Promotes Internet Freedom, Lifts Regulations

August 5, 2005

By Staff

WASHINGTON, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Americans should be able to surf anywhere on the Internet and use any software they choose, U.S. communications regulators said on Friday as they lifted regulations in an effort to spur high-speed Internet access.

The Federal Communications Commission issued a statement of principles that encourages providers of broadband to allow consumers access to any Internet content and applications they want.

As the agency lifted regulations on digital subscriber line (DSL) broadband service by phone companies, technology firms expressed concerns that broadband providers might block competitors' sites or try to stop the use of certain Web-based services for commercial gain.

Magazines Profile Small Entrepreneurs

August 5, 2005

Small is big, according to business magazines this month. After all, it's those feisty little entrepreneurs who end up revolutionizing the business world in substantial ways.

“America's Fastest-Growing Small Companies” graces the cover of the July/August issue of Fortune Small Business. For five years in a row, the magazine has ranked the top 100 small firms by earnings and revenue growth and stock performance, excluding banks and real estate companies.

Taser, a company that makes stun guns for law enforcement officers and civilians, tops the list. Laserscope, a maker of medical lasers and fiber-optic devices, comes in second, helped this year by a strong-selling system for treating enlarged prostates. The number-three spot goes to Ngas Resources, a natural-gas producer that has benefited from rising energy prices.

FCC Moves Could Promote WiMAX

August 4, 2005

By Staff

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s plan to deregulate DSL could boost the prospects for WiMAX, the slowly evolving standard for wireless broadband, by forcing Congress to allocate enough frequencies to support the technology.

“The FCC ruling could make wireless broadband a bigger and much more crucial battleground than ever,” said Joe Nordgaard, managing director of Spectral Advantage, a wireless strategic consulting firm. “Congress has been lobbied for months now to free more frequencies for wireless broadband to the home. If competition is reduced on the DSL path, wireless access will gain significantly from a competitive standpoint.”

Vonage Makes Deal for WiMax VoIP

August 3, 2005

By Susan B. Shor

Vonage has taken a step into the WiMax world, making a deal with TowerStream, a provider of high-speed Internet access. The deal is the first of its kind between VoIP and WiMax services.

"TowerStream is not one of the largest providers, so it's a modest deal," Roger Entner, vice president of wireless telecom, Ovum, told TechNewsWorld. "It's the first of many deals to come."

The Big Picture

But William Stofega, research manager, IDC, said the deal gives a glimpse of Vonage's business strategy.
