Vonage Rings Up Business

August 15, 2005

By Monica Gagnier

In a deal that could help it remain a pioneering force in telecom, Vonage will team with wireless service provider TowerStream to offer phone service to TowerStream's 1,000 small and midsize corporate customers in major U.S. cities starting Aug. 2.

Plug your firm into internet telephony

August 14, 2005

By Matthew Wall

MANY firms have broadband networks but are still using fixed-line telephone services for voice calls. This doesn’t make sense. You can use your broadband connection for both data and voice and cut your communications bill considerably.

Internet telephony, or Voice Over Internet Protocol (Voip) in the jargon, is rapidly gaining ground. Pret A Manger, the sandwich group, says it is saving £10,000 a month after switching.

Store Combines Wireless Needs Under One Roof

August 12, 2005

By James S. Granelli

John Wiegand spent more than two hours driving to Cingular Wireless, Verizon Wireless and other brand-name stores in his search for a new mobile phone.

Not only was it a hassle, it was unproductive: He found it difficult to compare the different plans and handsets.

"Everywhere I went, each salesman would say, 'This is the best plan for you,' " the Costa Mesa, Calif., firefighter said.

Vonage, Linksys Offer $45 ATA in UK

August 12, 2005

If Vonage’s entry into the UK market is anything to go by, there could be a bit of an adjustment to local ATA pricing.

The company has teamed up with Linksys and is is retailing the PAP2 broadband telephone adapter for just £20 (AUD$46.83 at today’s exchange rate), which is lower than US RRP.

As more and more Americans turn to high-speed Internet connections, and as telephone and cable companies begin to compete for telecommunication services, consumer advocacy groups are starting to focus on various aspects of this new broadband world.

While the emerging landscape holds great promise for more consumer choice, that doesn't mean there aren't pitfalls.

One immediate concern is continued access to the entire World Wide Web, an area in which the Federal Communications Commission unfortunately just missed an early opportunity to provide clarity. The FCC opted to pass on so-called net- neu trality regulations, and will take cable and phone compa nies at their word that access won't be denied or service impaired to sites operated by competitors.

Vonage Launch £20 VoIP Phone Adapter

August 11, 2005

By Stuart Miles

Vonage, the broadband telephone company, has announced a PAP2 broadband telephone adapter from Linksys that will enable you to make calls over the internet from your existing phone handset.

Vonage’s broadband telephone service works using a standard touch-tone telephone handset instead of a headset plugged into a PC.

Vonage Ships £20 Phone Adaptor

August 11, 2005

By Tony Smith

VoIP specialist Vonage has begun offering Linksys' handset adaptor in the UK. The device allows two ordinary phones to be connected directly to a broadband Internet link and used to make VoIP calls.

The 10 x 10 x 1.5cm unit, the PAP2, isn't Vonage-specific, working instead with standard Internet telephony protocols such as SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and a range of voice-compression technologies.

Let (Cordless) Freedom Ring

August 22, 2005

By Peter Lewis

ANTONIO MEUCCI invented the telephone around 1860. Terri Pall, a jazz musician, invented the cordless phone in 1965. A whole bunch of nerds invented the Internet in 1969 when everyone else was partying at Woodstock. And now, in the technology equivalent of a three-way conference call that took 145 years to connect, say hello to the cordless broadband Internet phone.

The VTech IP 8100-2 Broadband Cordless Phone System ($ 100 after a $ 50 mail-in rebate) allows consumers with high-speed Internet access to wander around the house making and receiving unlimited calls in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico for as little as $ 25 a month, using the Vonage voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) phone service. It works only with Vonage, and not with rival VOIP services. Consisting of a small base station and a pair of 5.8-gigahertz cordless phones--extra handsets cost $ 50 each, and as many as four handsets can be connected--the VTech and Vonage system is easier to set up than other VOIP systems I've tried, and it won't interfere with most home Wi-Fi networks. Best of all, the Vonage service is more advanced and versatile--and sometimes significantly cheaper--than the phone services we grew up with.

FCC Bans Blocking

August 8, 2005

By Staff

While much of the reaction to Friday’s U.S. Federal Communications Commission ruling has been focused on ISPs, a policy statement issued as part of the commission’s deregulation of DSL services could add much-needed legal protection for VoIP carriers such as Vonage and Skype.

The FCC issued a statement that it does not want the newly freed DSL providers and cable operators to use their total control of their networks to interfere with the access rights of direct competitors such as VoIP providers.
