New Uses for Wi-Fi

September 1, 2005

By Edward Distel

The success of services like Vonage demonstrates a definite appetite for low-cost internet phone calls. The next step is taking the VoIP experience to go. UTStarcom plans to have its F1000 Wi-Fi VoIP phone (under $100), which will work with Vonage’s service, in the market by December. Besides the obvious spatial limitations of making phone calls in the 150-foot Wi-Fi coverage zone, Wi-Fi hardware requires certain quality-of-service characteristics that not every network is equipped with Battery life. IP vulnerability and data throughput are other potential obstacles. Will users be attracted to Wi-Fi only handsets, as opposed to cell phones that juggle both cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity?

Number of Internet-Phone Consumers Soars

August 17, 2005

By Brian Bergstein

The number of consumers bypassing the traditional phone network and opting for Internet voice service is soaring beyond expectations.

An analysis by the TeleGeography research group found 2.7 million subscribers nationwide in the second quarter, compared with just 440,000 a year earlier.

The technology, known as Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, requires a broadband Internet line but generally offers inexpensive calling plans and novel features such as the ability to manage voice mail on a Web page.

Vonage Review: VTech IP 8100-2 Broadband Cordless Phone System

Consumer Electronics Review: VTech IP 8100-2 Broadband Cordless Phone System

August 17, 2005

By Joal Evans

RATINGS:
Quality: 5 out of 5
Geekness: 5 out of 5

Description: VTECH Router and two cordless handsets for the Vonage VoIP system.

Highlights: No extra base for cordless phones required; router for Vonage service also powers the cordless headsets; message waiting indicator on router

Lowlights: None

Vendor/Reseller: Vonage

Price: US$149.99 (minus $50 rebate after 60 days of use)

In June of 2004 we reviewed Vonage's VoIP offering, and we liked it so much that we not only moved the Geek.com corporate line to it, but our Chief Editor also ended up using Vonage for his home line.

So, it's not surprising that we were eager to try out Vonage's new beta VTECH IP 8100-2 Broadband cordless phone system. As the name implies, it's a kit that ships with a router for connecting VoIP and two VTECH 5.8GHz cordless headsets. The headsets themselves are feature-rich and include caller ID, call waiting, hands-free speakerphone on the handset, the ability to transfer calls and conference in outside callers, intercom features between handsets, a 50-name and number phonebook directory, and more. The phone system's coolest feature is its ability to handle up to four handsets! This could totally fill just about anyone's home phone needs.

Dial 'M' for Maveric

August 11, 2005

By Ben Steelman

She has form-fitting jeans and three-toned hair, and she might pass for Jessica Simpson if you're extremely nearsighted or under the influence of a controlled substance.

If you're not nearsighted, you'll notice the metallic keypad just north of her bellybutton.

She's a telephone. You talk into her hand.

VOIP Is A Challenge For Telephone Firms

August 16, 2005

By Pauline Wangui

It is now official. The Communications Commission of Kenya last week issued guidelines for the provision of voice over internet protocol (VoiP).

Going by the Commission's definition, VoiP is the transmission of voice as packets over traditional switched networks or over internet networks (a telecommunication service whereby voice messages are transmitted as packets over the internet or other telecommunications network).

If you need any convincing that voice over IP is the next big thing in computing, you only need to look at this product. It isn’t a piece of hardware, nor a service, but a combination of both. In the same way your broadband supplier probably provides a ‘free’ ADSL modem when you sign up to its service, so Vonage is bundling the Linksys RT31P2-VU when you sign up to either its Residential Unlimited or Small Business Unlimited plans.

Phone Calls For Next To Nothing

August 16, 2005

By David Frith

THE time is surely coming when we can ditch our landline telephones and slash our phone bills.

Slowly but surely the technology called voice over internet protocol is gaining popularity.

VoIP sends calls over the internet, removing most of the cost, making many calls free and cutting the cost of international calls to just a few cents.
