September 1, 2005

By Mickey Alam Khan

The American Teleservices Association reached out to members and their call center representatives nationwide yesterday to support the American Red Cross in relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

ATA's leadership has contacted its 600 members, asking them to have their employees visit the trade lobby's site at www.ataconnect.org and click through to donate to the Red Cross. The ATA members collectively have an estimated 1 million call center employees.

Internet Telephony Keeps Baton Rouge Hospital In Touch When Hurricane Hits

August 31, 2005

By Corey McKenna

As New Orleans hospitals are forced to evacuate in the wake of hurricane Katrina, major trauma and critical-care hospitals in other parts of Louisiana are having to crowd patients into every available unused space. One such hospital is Baton Rouge General.

Operating on the power supplied by a back-up generator and with the availability of local phone service but no long distance, the hospital turned to technology to keep information flowing. Fortunately, the hospital still had its broadband Internet connection, so the hospital's information technology outsourcing provider, PHNS, coordinated donations from several companies including Dell, Vonage and a local Radio Shack.

Expanded Wi-Fi Part of Relief Effort

August 31, 2005

By Staff

General has enhanced its Wi-Fi network to enable it to treat patients displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The 448-bed hospital is taking in many patients forced to evacuate New Orleans hospitals because of damage and flooding from the hurricane.

The rush of new patients has required Baton Rouge General to step up its I.T., including its Wi-Fi network. The hospital and PHNS, its Dallas-based I.T. outsourcing vendor, have enhanced its Wi-Fi network to reach areas that are being used to house New Orleans patients. The hospital is placing patients into all available space in its facility. Baton Rouge General also expects to receive 20 complementary notebook PCs from Round Rock, Texas-based Dell Inc. to use to access its enhanced Wi-Fi network.

The New Generation of VoIP in the Workplace

August 30, 2005

By Jack M. Germain

Integrated Voice over Internet Protocol conferencing is the technology of the future, say communications experts. Unlike conferencing technology of the past, VoIP -- integrated with video and collaboration tools -- allows people across the globe to work on business projects and develop documents in real time, with unmatched accuracy and unparalleled efficiency.

Experts predict that 95 percent of large and midsize companies will start adopting integrated VoIP technology within the next five years. Heightened mergers and acquisitions within the communications industry, plus increased regulatory actions by the government and tighter controls on corporate expenses, will position the next generation of VoIP service to change the way business is conducted forever.

Gamers Letting Their Voices Be Heard

August 30, 2005

By Li Yuan

As an online war game called “Battlefield 2” recently unfolded, Frank Ribecca, in the role of a U.S. Marine, was virtually toting an M16 assault rifle in an unnamed Mideastern city.

Suddenly, one of his fellow Marines, controlled by a gamer with the screen name “Kamiken,” whispered to him, “Enemy car spotted.” Reacting to the other player’s warning, Ribecca made his figure jump onto the roof of a nearby house and pump the enemy vehicle full of bullets.

Ribecca, a 27-year-old barbershop manager, had never met Kamiken or any of the other 62 players in the game. They were around the world and communicated through headsets with microphones plugged into computers linked to the Internet..

Corporate America usually is happiest when government stays out of its business.

But with the Internet changing the world in new and often confusing ways, a growing number of technology and telecom executives are suddenly calling for more leadership and direction from the federal government.

How to Get Online Voice

August 27, 2005

By Staff

There are several ways in which voice over Internet protocol, familiarly called VOIP, is available.

Some companies, like Vonage Holdings, offer phone service using a normal phone hooked up to the Internet. These services, which are fee-based, are designed to take market share from the traditional phone companies. Vonage's service is cheaper than that of the phone companies because the company doesn't have to build its own copper network, and it is exempt from having to pay all kinds of phone fees.

A Call for Cool

August 25, 2005

By Tonya Jameson

What's that hanging from your hip? Or buried in your purse?

Maybe it's a spunkless factory cell phone in need of a makeover. Or maybe you're already on top of the game.

When your phone rings, everyone hears Prince's "U Got the Look." And you're way too stylish to have a factory faceplate: Pamela Anderson covers your phone and you've got a handcuff charm hanging from the antenna.
