Why VoIP Telephony is Quickly Coming of Age

September 9, 2005

By Michiyo Nakamoto, Mark Odell, Paul Taylor and Richard Waters

One of the pioneers of internet telephony this week reached a milestone. Vonage Holdings, a New Jersey-based start-up, announced that, less than two-and-a-half years after it launched its consumer services, it had signed up its millionth paying customer. Jeffrey Citron, Vonage's chief executive, talked of its having created "a tidal wave of change" in a dormant telecommunications industry.

In the hyperbole-prone technology world, such claims might be easily dismissed. But most analysts agree that the recent dramatic growth of residential services and subscriber numbers using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) - albeit from a relatively small base - points to a big future for the technology.

Internet 'Phones' Hot Stuff During Labour Dispute

September 7, 2005

By Sheila Potter

The long-feared competition has finally arrived for the big phone companies - and its just a mouse click away.

If you haven't yet heard of Voice Over Internet Provider (VOIP) services, you soon will. Also known as "digital phones" or "Internet telepohony", VOIP is a telephone technology where the signal is carried over the Internet rather than across phone lines.

So far it hasn't made large inroads into Greater Victoria, but companies like Vonage are starting to offer local service with a Victoria area code. Among the new VOIP companies jumping into the local market is a small, three-man outfit called AcroVoice.

Vonage Reaches A Million Subscribers

September 6, 2005

By Ben Charny

Internet phone operator Vonage said Tuesday it now has more than a million customers, marking another milestone for the nascent industry of selling phone calls over Internet connections.

The 4-year-old firm, based in Edison, N.J., smashed the million mark on the strength of its present advertising campaign, which Jupiter Research analyst Joe Laszlo said he considers to be among the top two currently on the Internet.

Vonage Holdings Corp. is the largest of the new breed of phone operators selling VOIP (voice over IP), which is software that digitizes phone calls so they can travel over the Internet just like e-mail.

Statement of Jeffrey Citron Co-Founder, Chairman, and CEO, Vonage

Committee on Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation

September 1, 2005

Good morning Senator Burns and members of the Committee. Thank you for the opportunity to appear here today. I'm Jeffrey Citron, CEO of Vonage Holdings Corporation. We are the leading provider of consumer and small business Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services in the United States, with nearly one million subscriber lines. Vonage is at the forefront of this new emerging market, which has approximately 2.3 million users, and as such we are also quickly becoming a leader in E911, as we move to deploy the first ever nationwide 911 service. This will be the first 911 service designed for an IP environment, across hundreds of locally controlled Selective Routers and thousands of Public Safety Answering Points. This is a serious undertaking. And we at Vonage are embracing this challenge not just for our customers but as a partner in the nation's E911 system. As we move forward in this exciting time in 911, VoIP is helping turn the notion of traditional 911 networking on its head. We are recognizing new opportunities to blend voice and data into exciting new offerings, but we are also confronting long-standing technical, operational and competitive barriers, as we try to connect to a system that all too often is obsolete and sheltered by old- fashioned telecom thinking.

Ordinary People Starring in Ads Convey Realistic, Genuine Feel

September 6, 2005

By Brian Steinberg

The 30-second commercial has long been the province of beautiful actors and actresses with gleaming white teeth. But amid questions about the effectiveness of traditional ads, marketers are increasingly opting for plain folks or clips of real events as a way to make their commercials more compelling.

When Ameriprise Financial, formerly American Express Financial Advisors, began the casting process for a new ad campaign designed to lure baby boomers to its services, the firm was going to use actors to portray retirees. But the thespians just didn't feel right.

"We found that it was too staged," says Kim Sharan, chief marketing officer of the company, which is in the process of being spun off by American Express. When actors were asked to play out what they'd be doing in retirement, she says, they "just didn't seem to be genuinely able to envision what that would look like."

Vonage today announced that it has become the first VoIP provider in North America to reach 1 million subscribers.

"In a very short time, Vonage has woken up a dormant telecommunications industry and sparked a tidal wave of change; activating over one million lines is both a milestone for Vonage and the industry," said Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman and CEO of Vonage Holdings Corp.

Vonage Restores Phone for Louisiana Hospital

September 1, 2005

By Staff

Baton Rouge General, one of the many medical facilities struggling with communications in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, this week was able to restore its long-distance connectivity using technology by Vonage Holdings Corp.

The local service had been restored but the hospital had been unable to make long-distance calls, which it needed to consult with physicians outside its area and to contact insurance providers.

IDEX Poll: 60 Percent of Companies Use Voice over IP

September 1, 2005

By Edahn Golan

This past week our poll took us a little away from the direct diamond industry issues to find out if in an era of global businesses and widely available Internet access, how many companies make use of Voice over IP (VoIP) to save on company costs.

According to our survey, 40 percent of companies use VoIP “extensively” in all their offices. Another 20 percent use it “on occasion”, while 32 percent of the companies don’t use the widely available technology at all.

In Katrina Aftermath, Vonage Helps Hospital Communicate

September 1, 2005

By Paul Dykewicz

Internet phone service is playing an important role in helping health-care professionals in at least one Baton Rouge, La., hospital that has received a large stream of incoming patients due to massive flooding in the region caused by Hurricane Katrina.

With estimates that 80% of New Orleans is under water, hospitals there have been forced to evacuate and to send patients to Louisiana’s other major trauma and critical care hospitals, including Baton Rouge General Hospital, which turned to Interest-based VoIP when traditionally long-distance phone services stopped working Monday. Dallas-based information management services provider PHNS responded by obtaining the needed equipment and service to obtain Internet wireless and long-distance services at the facility within just a couple of days.

For Whom the Baby Bell Tolls

September 1, 2005

By Alyce Lomax

Today, several news agencies reported that SBC Communications may change its name to AT&T when it acquires the venerable telecom. However, investors should ponder whether that name stands for honored tradition or creaky obsolescence. Maybe, just maybe, it's getting a little old.

Clearly, the AT&T moniker -- which originally stood for American Telephone & Telegraph Co. -- is known worldwide. AT&T definitely has history on its side, considering that it's been around for more than 100 years. There are many great brands in the world, but few have AT&T's lineage. According to the news reports, that name recognition may have SBC leaning toward adopting the AT&T name, since SBC is only widely recognized in certain regions of the country.
