Future Calling: A Voice-Over-Broadband Hands-On

October 23, 2002

By Matthew Miller

NEW YORK- In the archive of our Inside the Digital Den articles, in which we try convergence products firsthand, you won't find many examples of unqualified praise. Whether it's immature software, unwieldy physical design, or useless instruction manuals, we always find something that deserves constructive criticism. However, I'm hard-pressed to find anything bad to say about DigitalVoice, a voice-over-broadband service available nationwide from Vonage.

Product Review: Vonage DigitalVoice

August 21, 2002

By Cosimo Leipold

If you make long distance calls and are sick of sending the phone company big checks, consider signing up for Vonage's VoIP service.

In the last few years, technology has transformed almost every household item; practically every product someone owns has made leaps and bounds. Televisions now come in plasma models, AC units are extensively programmable, microwaves come with voice reminder features. Yes, everything has changed dramatically, with one exception: my phone.

Product Reviews: DigitalVoice

June 1, 2002

By Staff

For quite some time there has been talk about offering residential voice services across broadband connections at rates less expensive than traditional PSTN while at the same time offering enhanced services such as call follow me and Web-based voice messaging. Vonage is just one example of several companies coming to market with products that provide high-quality, SIP-based VoIP communications solutions with advanced telephony features.

Price Is Right For Using The Net For Phone Calls

May 1, 2002

By Ed Baig

What relatively inexpensive technology has been in homes for decades, works reliably most of the time, appeals to all age groups and is user-friendly? Need a hint? Everybody - and I mean everybody - can reach out and touch somebody with it.

The answer is the phone, of course, and dare I suggest that all of you by now have mastered the art of calling, without considering very often how these communications actually occur.

On the Internet, Talk Is Cheap

April 15, 2002

By Lev Grossman

When I told a friend I was making phone calls over the Internet he chuckled urbanely, sat me down in a comfy chair and gently explained that no, you get the Internet over your phone, not the other way round, and for God's sake, would I please try to pull myself together?

He was wrong, of course. Internet phone service is very real, and newfangled as it sounds, it has one very old-fashioned American virtue: it's cheap.
