Voice over IP is finally coming into its own

Vonage In Print News

By Deb Shinder, TechRepublic

June 4, 2003

Voice over IP (VoIP) is a dream concept that has been a while in the making. The idea of conducting all your telephone calls over the Internet--and avoiding high long distance charges from Telcos in the process--is an attractive one for any budget-conscious CIO. However, quality and reliability have been big problems for IP phone services in the past, and the need for compatible software on both ends of the conversation kept many from investing in the products for a long time.

Dialing Up A Better Phone

June 4, 2003

By David Lidsky

Dear Dave:

Why don't you ask to be assigned a column you like instead of filling your current column with such negativity and complaints???

Fred

Fred, let me explain if I can. I'm like the Incredible Hulk reviewing tech. I get angry when products with promise let me down (but without all the clothes-ripping and green muscles). Occasionally something doesn't disappoint, like the latest in Internet telephones. This one's for you.

Vonage Digital Voice

May 27, 2003

By Phil Ferreira

Vonage Digital Voice is a pretty interesting offering. Broadband is pretty common these days, so why not run your phone line over your internet connection? Why not be able to call anyone in the United States or Canada for just $39.99 a month? It's not like Dialpad.com. This is real phone service, complete with dial tone, phone number and when someone calls you on a real land line phone your Internet phone (which uses your existing telephone) really rings!

Vonage In Print News

May 21, 2003

Time Warner Cable's "Digital Phone" will cost $40 a month and be available only in the Portland, Maine, area. Time Warner's trial offering is similar to experiments with telephone services from rival cable providers Comcast and Cablevision Systems.

Calling plans are the latest weapon cable providers are using as they battle for dominance of U.S. broadband services market. Nearly 60 percent of all U.S. homes get broadband from their cable television provider. The rest of the homes wired for broadband in the United States use digital subscriber line connections from telephone companies.

Upstart telecommunications company is making name for itself with inexpensive ph

Vonage In Print News
May 21, 2003

By Jeff May

With slick television ads and a strong word-of-mouth campaign, Vonage is making a name for itself selling cheap phone service to customers with speedy Internet connections.

The privately held company has plenty of buzz. What it doesn't have -- by design -- is glitz.

Its headquarters is on a scruffy stretch of Route 27 in Edison, just across the road from an Entenmann's Bakery Outlet. The offices were once home to Aplion Networks, a telecommunications upstart laid low by the tech bust. The defunct firm's foosball table still occupies a prominent place in the middle of the suite.

'Dear Nick': Advice Column For Auction Users (The Mobile Office)

May 18, 2003

By Staff

eBay PowerSeller Nick Sevino (a pseudonym) answers questions about buying and selling on eBay.

Dear Nick,

I'm an eBay Powerseller and I work out of my house. My wife is driving me to the poorhouse. I can't seem to get work done, and there is always an excuse for her to bother me. Ranging from can you watch the Baby while I take a shower to the sink is broken. When I worked at a normal office this never happened. Business is not that great, and I don't want to lay out thousands for an office and high rent. Any suggestions?

Miguel

Vonage Eyes Canada For Expansion Of VoIP Service

May 16, 2003

TORONTO -(Dow Jones)- Vonage Holding Corp., a closely held voice over Internet-protocol (VoIP) phone company based in the U.S., aims to start offering telephony services to residential customers in Canada by the end of this year, which could mean that rates charged by Canada's existing phone companies could come under further pressure. Canada's residential phone market is dominated by the country's incumbents - BCE Inc.'s (BCE) Bell Canada, Telus Corp. (TU), Aliant Inc. (T.AIT), and Manitoba Telecom Services (T.MBT) - and Call-Net Enterprises Inc. (CNEZF), an alternative service provider.

Internet service offers low-cost calling plans

May 7, 2003

By Brett Lieberman

Of Our Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON - In this era of nonstop offers and deals on telephone service, it's not unusual for phone users to change long-distance providers and even local providers.

But Vijay Patwardhan doesn't just intend to switch to another provider. He plans to drop the local phone service that Verizon provides to his Hampden Twp. home.
