 June's Broadband Winners

Vonage In Print News
June 17, 2003

The cyberpunk movement among science fiction writers a few years ago had a saying: "The street finds its own use for things." That idea seems to have informed our picks for this month. We were impressed by players using technology in different ways, or sliding around the usual market barriers to create new ideas. In other words, originality counts. On the other hand, originality, pretty much by definition, requires leaving behind the hard-earned experience of those who made the standard stuff work. Even though originality may impress us, we're not necessarily going to invest in it just yet.

Voice Providers Tout Their Wares at National Show
By Karen Brown
June 16, 2003

Chicago— It might have been more a of murmur compared to HDTV's roar, but you could still hear the sound of voice-over-Internet protocol technology on the National Show floor.

Though much of the interest — and certainly the splashy publicity — on the McCormick Place floor was centered around television products, there still were pockets of voice technology providers. But much of the VoIP chatter at this year's National Show centered not on the technology, but on a crop of companies offering ready-made, "heat-and-eat" telephony services that rely on existing cable-modem data channels.

 Clear Signals for Internet Phones

Vonage In Print News
By Steve Rosenbush, Peter Burrows & Roger O. Crockett

June 11, 2003

The people of Appleton, Wis., have long been open to new technology. The city of 76,000, about 100 miles north of Milwaukee, was home to the nation's first hydroelectric power plant in 1882 and the first successful electric-cable-car company in 1886. So perhaps it shouldn't surprise anyone that Appleton is a pioneer in telephone technology. About 18 months ago, the city's schools replaced their regular phone network with an optical-fiber system based on Internet technology. Combining voice and data on a single high-speed wire, the school district has reduced telecom expenses by 30% a year. "I can't think of moving back," says Jim Hawbaker, the district's director of technology.

Vonage Cables in Armstrong VoIP Deal

Vonage In Print News

By Ryan Naraine

June 10, 2003

Voice-over Internet Protocol (VoIP) darling Vonage has clinched a deal to hawk broadband phone service to Armstrong Cable television subscribers in five U.S. cities.

The Edison, N.J.-based Vonage, which offers SIP-based local and long distance calling throughout the U.S. and Canada, said the Armstrong Cable deal was the first MSO (define) to sign up for its VoIP flat-rate phone service.

The wolf is finally at Bell's front door

Vonage In Print News
By Tyler Hamilton

June 9, 2003

Eyes must have rolled when Micheal Sabia, chief executive of BCE Inc., told shareholders last month that new wireless and Internet technologies pose a serious threat to Ma Bell's iron grip on local competition in Canada.

He went so far as to ask the federal telephone watchdog to take this into account before more regulatory steps are taken to balance the playing field for new competitors.

We've heard the "impending technological threat" argument before - back when former CEO Jean Monty was assembling his convergence empire, which is currently being dismantled, and certainly on the day when local competition was first introduced in Canada at the beginning of 1998.

Michael Egan and are back with new technology

Vonage In Print News

By Patrick Danner
June 9, 2003

Theglobe . com is hoping its latest stab at tapping an emerging technology goes better than its first.

The one-time high-flying Internet company is banking its comeback on Voice-over-Internet-Protocol, a technology where voice calls are routed cheaply over the Internet rather than the traditional phone system.

''We see this turning into a very big business, let me put it that way,'' says Michael S. Egan, theglobe . com's chairman and chief executive. ``I don't want to quantify it because then I've stuck the yardstick in front of us.''

Dialing Up a Better Phone

Dear Dave:

Why don't you ask to be assigned a column you like instead of filling your current column with such negativity and complaints???

Fred, let me explain if I can. I'm like the Incredible Hulk reviewing tech. I get angry when products with promise let me down (but without all the clothes-ripping and green muscles). Occasionally something doesn't disappoint, like the latest in Internet telephones. This one's for you.

Vonage Pitch: Broaband Phone Company Hopes MSOs Will Play Ball

Vonage In Print News

Broadband Bulletin:
by Amy Frazier
June 4, 2003

There will be a relatively new face making the rounds at National next week. Broadband telephony upstart Vonage is looking to partner with MSOs and will be announcing a deal with its 1st cable operator (Vonage wouldn't name the operator, but said it ranks 11-20 in the US - don't you just love it when vendors are cagey?). What's interesting about such an alliance is that Vonage has been using cable's pipe at no cost for more than a year, signing 25K+ customers who plug their high speed-modem lines into routers and then connect the router to an MTA for unlimited calls at $39.99/month. Vonage has tapped Phil Giordano (a 14-year vet of Advance Newhouse) as its cable ambassador. His message: "We don't want them to look at us as an enemy, but a partner. Rather than spending capital to buy equipment, softswitches, etc, Vonage will do that. Sort-of an 'add water and stir.'" The service would be branded completely under the MSO, which would be responsible for marketing. MSOs would receive a share of revenue. But it's not clear how many operators will bite, since many seem intent on implementing their own VoIP trials with telephony riding on their networks as opposed to over the 'Net as with Vonage. Giordano says Vonage is in trials with several MSOs and execs at 15 of the top 20 MSOs are trying the service. The company's also looking at setting up similar arrangements with ISPs. Merrill Lynch's [MER] Adam Quinton said in a recent research note that Vonage is not a major threat to primary providers of local voice service given the lack of scale, but it could help drive broadband penetration.
