Vonage Plans Market Move in 'Strong Way': Coming to Canada: Talks with Carriers

Vonage In Print News

By Mark Evans

Vonage Holdings Corp., which offers local and long-distance telephone service over high-speed Internet networks, plans to move into Canada later this year.

Jeffrey Citron, Vonage's chairman and chief executive officer, said discussions have taken place with several Canadian carriers and cable companies. He said Vonage needs one or two partners, noting that Rogers Communications Corp., Call-Net Enterprises Inc. and Allstream Corp. would be good candidates.

Net Phone Firms Plan Local Service: U.S. Start-ups aim to Voice over High-speed

Vonage In Print News
By Tyler Hamilton

At least two U.S.-based companies will begin offering local phone service through high-speed Internet connections this year as part of a trickle of competition entering the Canadian telecom market.

"Barring any major obstacles, we will be in Canada at the end of this year," said Jeffrey Citron, co-founder and chief executive officer of Edison, N.J.-based Vonage Holdings Corp.

Citron was in Toronto yesterday pitching his business at a Merrill Lynch analyst conference.

Vonage Launches Toll Free Plus, Call Hunt

Vonage In Print News
By Tara Seals

Wholesale partners soon will be able to add toll-free numbers and a "call hunt" feature to Vonage Holdings Corp.'s Vonage broadband telephone service. The features, launched this week, will be available to resellers in mid-August.

The company's Toll Free Plus service, for residential and small business accounts, costs Vonage subscribers $4.99 per month, per line. Subscribers to any Vonage calling plan can choose from a range of toll-free numbers and receive 100 free inbound minutes, with additional minutes at 4.9 cents per minute thereafter.

Long Distance, Big Savings With Internet Phone Service

Vonage In Print News

By Jeffery D. Zbar

Long-distance charges were getting to Scott Rosenthal.

From his home office in Wellington, the sales executive would easily spend $150 a month calling his Portsmouth, N.H.-based employer, as well as clients nationwide.

Then in 2002, Rosenthal learned about a way to save the company money, voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP. He switched from a traditional long-distance carrier to a broadband phone company.

iChat AV Poses Threat to Phone Companies

Vonage In Print NewsJuly 9,2003

By Peter Cohen

Alex Salkever posits With iChat, Who Needs a Phone? in his latest Byte of the Apple column for BusinessWeek Online. Salkever doesn't think that iChat AV will replace the phone specifically, but talks in broad strokes about voice and video teleconferencing over the Internet in general.

Salkever waxes rhapsodic about recent offerings from Apple like the iTunes Music Store and iChat AV. iChat AV, released as a public beta during last month's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), offers video and audio teleconferencing to users with FireWire-based digital video Webcams. In fact, Apple has released its own FireWire-based Webcam called the iSight, and has been selling them briskly since iChat AV's release, by many anecdotal accounts.

Calling via Internet has Suddenly Arrived

Vonage In Print NewsBy Paul Davidson

Mark Jaffe of St. Louis recently threw caution to the wind and ditched his trusty SBC Communications local phone service in favor of an offering from an Internet phone start-up called Vonage.

Now his calls travel over the Internet via his cable broadband line. His typical $120 monthly bill has been cut to a flat $39.99 rate for unlimited local and long-distance calls and features such as caller ID. Because his physical location is irrelevant for Internet phone service, he was able to choose a number with a San Francisco area code (415), allowing a close friend in that city to dodge long-distance charges. Plus, via a PC he can hear his voice mail by clicking on e-mail, and he can update his call-forwarding, track his calls and bills and even change his phone number, all on the Web.

 Let Freedom Ring

Vonage In Print NewsBy Christopher Whalen

Back In February, two Democrats and a Republican on the Federal Communications Commission carried the day in a widely publicized but rarely understood 3-2 vote not to deregulate the telephone market. FCC Chairman Michael Powell was embarrassed, and took to spinning. He told Congress that the stunning defeat of his plan actually was "a substantial step in our broadband agenda -- focusing on new infrastructure investment in the traditional last-mile telephone network.

Vonage: Wall Street Sees the VoIP Challenge to Residential Phone

Vonage In Print News

By Converge Staff

In the past two weeks, Banc of America and Merrill Lynch have both alerted investors that North America’s residential telephone market faces potentially dramatic changes from VoIP challengers in the months ahead. New "virtual phone services," served over the Internet using SIP and low-cost telephone-to-Ethernet adapters, are now on the radar screens of the investment community because they could add to the wireless substitution trend and further erode the RBOC's residential phone business. VoIP cable services are seen as the largest threat. Both reports also cite Vonage and its broadband telephony service as a leader in a wave of independent "virtual service providers" that could take up any telephony voids left by cable.
