Top Ten Tech

July 31, 2003

By Suzanne Blanchard

Last week, we switched from traditional telephone service to VoIP through Vonage. It took literally minutes to hook up, even though we did not have a home network and so I needed to install a router as well. It took me longer to write down my current Internet configuration than it did to hook up the router, cable modem, telephone adapter and telephone. At a flat rate of $33 per month, we will save $1,000 each year and receive a wider array of services than we had from Verizon.

Free Phone Calls

July 29,2003

By John C. Dvorak

Recently, I packed up my little Cisco ATA 186 Analog Telephone Adapter, along with a compact D-Link DI-604 Ethernet Broadband Router, and checked in to my favorite small hotel in New York City: the Park South on 28th Street. This new boutique gem is located a few steps from a subway entrance and one block from PC Magazine's offices; it loans DVDs, has fabulous pillows, and has free T1 connections in the rooms.

Vonage Refines Internet Phone Service; Service Provides More Amenities For Less Money Than Traditional Carriers

July 30, 2003

By Tom Rasmussen

No, this is not a SPAM message. I'm talking about a service from a company called Vonage ( ) that lets subscribers make phone calls over the Internet.

Stop laughing: This is the real thing. I'm not talking about some point-to-point VoIP utility, but a real alternative to local and long-distance phone service. For $39.99 per month (I pay that much for my basic local service alone), users can make unlimited calls to anywhere in the United States and Canada. The monthly charge includes voice mail, call waiting, caller ID, call forwarding, online account management and voice mail retrieval. The Vonage phone service isn't much different from the conventional telephone service we're used to. Vonage provides a Cisco ATA 186, a little black box that plugs into the user's Internet connection and analog phones. That's about it for installation and setup. Plug in the power, give it a few minutes to register itself, and before you know it, you have a dial tone. You won't have to take time off to wait for a technician, but you will need to get a cable router if you don't already have one to share the Internet connections.

In VoIP, Dumbing Down is Good

July 21,2003

By Anthony Crupi

Otto von Bismarck once observed that people with an appetite for law or for sausage should not watch either one being made.

MSOs looking to market VoIP would do well to heed those words. Apocryphal or not, there's a germ of truth in them that relates to the key challenge operators are up against when trying to introduce this potentially esoteric product.

Analyst: SBC-Echostar Pact to Hasten Cable VoIP Plans

Vonage In Print News

July 21,2003
By Jeff Baumgartner

The agreement between SBC Communications and EchoStar Communications to co-brand and co-market digital satellite TV services could cause cable operators to accelerate their plans for IP telephony, predicted Salomon Smith Barney, in a research note.

"While this partnership does not change our fundamental view on the cable industry, we believe that it raises the stakes in the cable/RBOC bundling battle and will further accelerate cable's push into IP phone service," Salomon Smith Barney wrote.

SBC Nudging into Satellite TV

July 22,2003

By Tammy Chase

SBC Communications Inc., the telephone company, wants you as a satellite TV customer.

The San Antonio-based phone giant said it reached an agreement with satellite television provider EchoStar to offer the SBC Dish Network next year. SBC said it will offer discounts to customers who sign up for both phone and satellite TV, although company officials were vague on just how good those discounts will be in a telephone conference call with reporters on Monday.

Hold the Phone: Calls Routed via Internet

Vonage In Print News

July 20,2003
By Urvaksh Karkaria

That inseparable connection between the telephone and its nearest jack is showing signs of breaking up as Internet-based technologies threaten the dominance of the landline.

While more an annoyance than full-blown threat, companies such as Vonage Inc. are using technology that transmits calls over the Internet, instead of a labyrinth of cables and copper wires, to grab market share from traditional phone companies.

How Vonage Could Cut Your Phone Bill - Really

Vonage In Print News

July 18,2003
By David Coursey

Voice-over-IP--the technology that routes voice telephone calls over the Internet--is all the rage with big corporations. But small businesses and consumers have been largely left out. There have been some attempts at penetrating these markets, but none have been as splashy as what Vonage is offering.

Battle of the Nets:

An Interview with Blair Levin

He has been on the frontlines of major changes in telecommunication policies since his days as chief of staff to former Federal Communications Commission Chairman Reed Hundt in 1993-97. Levin now provides counsel to Legg Mason Wood Walker clients on regulatory developments of importance to media and telecom investors. As managing director of Legg Mason's Telecommunications Equity Research Group, he most recently distinguished himself by making a smart, contrarian call on a closely watched regulatory decision that established new rules for the telecom network platform. The decision had a major negative impact on the Baby Bells. For his insights into some of the latest issues in telecom and media, please read on.
