Vonage: 50,000 Lines Activated
September 24, 2003
By Kevin Fitchard

Vonage, the Internet protocol-based phone company, says it has activated 50,000 lines on its network since launching service in April 2002.

Vonage, of Edison, N.J., markets local and long-distance phone service to consumers and small businesses through direct sales and wholesale partnerships with other communications companies, including Earthlink Inc. and Advanced Cable Communications.

Shift to Voice over IP Underway: Expert

Vonage In Print News

September 24, 2003
By Sheila M. Averbuch

IRELAND -- Telcos will see up to 40 percent of their fixed-line traffic leak away to other networks in five to seven years, an IP communications expert has warned.

Speaking on Tuesday at the telecoms conference Voice on the Net (VON) in Boston, CEO Jeff Pulver of IP communications company Pulver.com said that technologies like broadband, Wi-Fi and satellite have triggered an inexorable shift of voice traffic to alternative networks. "People are increasingly communicating with other people who are on these networks, so there's less of a need for them to depend on legacy networks," Pulver said. "The traffic is naturally moving

Is the World Ready to Make Phone Calls Via the Internet? After Six Years of Hype, the Answer is a Resounding Maybe

September 24, 2003
By Jeff May

BOSTON -- Internet phone technology may finally be poised to hit the big time.

The telltale sign: The industry's leading lights are trying to tamp down the hype, not dial it up.

Instead of the swagger that characterized meetings such as the influential Voice on the Net conference a few years ago, some executives this time almost seemed to poor-mouth the state of things. They pointed out Internet phone companies control just one-tenth of 1 percent of the local lines in the United States.

Continuing the look at games as a mainstream consideration that's been the subject of this column for the past few weeks in one form or another, there's the announcement that Intel is developing a new version of its Pentium 4 processor, which it will call "Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading Technology, Extreme Edition." The info was released as part of the Intel Developer Forum that was held in San Jose last week.

Advice to the CRTC: The U.S. has Proven that Regulators and Subsidy Schemes do not Lead to Competition in the Local Telephone Market
September 23, 2003
By Robert W. Crandall

In recent months, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has been under pressure to create more local telephone competition in Canada. The Industry Minister has asked the CRTC to consider additional measures to promote competition outside the major urban centres, and Call-Net -- one of the entrants -- has petitioned the commission to provide new subsidies for local entrants. In addition, AllStream -- the other large Canadian entrant -- is asking the CRTC for access to the established telephone companies' facilities at low, regulated rates so that it can expand into new data services without building its own facilities.

With business users as its main focus, the PC industry has pretty much spent most of its life taking aim at the role of a PC in business and enterprise markets.

But in 1992, the PC vendors took a bit of a detour with the introduction of the CD-ROM and began trying to influence more users to buy PCs for their homes.

Level 3 Dives Deeper Into Voice

Vonage In Print News

September 22, 2003
By Vince Vittore

Level 3 will announce two new services this week, including one that allows carriers to handle customer-originated calls for the first time.

The more conventional of the two, a service called (3)Tone, is a hosted voice application designed to replace PBX, IP PBX and Centrex systems. Level 3 claims that the new service can save enterprise users as much as 40% in combined capex and opex. It also marks the company's first move into a voice origination service after years of having it on the product roadmap

Lawmaker Aims To Suspend VoIP Regulation

Lawmaker Aims To Suspend VoIP Regulation

September 16, 2003

By Ben Charny

A Pennsylvania state senator wants a five-year, statewide moratorium on regulations and taxes aimed at companies selling voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) dialing.

VoIP is a new breed of cheaper phone service that lets people place calls through the Internet and avoid telephone companies' local and long-distance networks. Although there are a relatively small number of subscribers, analysts say Internet telephony is poised to threaten the long-standing dominance of major U.S. phone companies such as BellSouth, SBC Communications, Verizon Communications and Qwest Communications International.

New Services Turn Web Connection Into Phone

Vonage In Print News

September 15, 2003
By Charlie Paschal

I've always said using the Internet as a telephone had promise, even back in the last century when you had to dial up to get Internet access, use a sound card and speakers to talk to someone for "free."

With today's high-speed Internet, more attention is rightly being focused on VOIP -- voice over Internet protocol, the technology to turn your Web connection into a telephone.
