A pair of Internet phone providers recently signed deals to help satellite companies add Net-phoning service to their arsenal of offerings
October 14, 2003
By Ben Charny
Hughes Electronics and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) provider Net2Phone announced an agreement this week to combine Hughes' satellite-delivered broadband service with Net2Phone's inexpensive dialing plans, which rely on the Internet rather than a phone company's privately owned network. The two companies are first targeting broadband- and phone-starved areas in Africa.

On Tuesday, New Jersey-based VoIP provider Vonage said it has a similar-sounding project in the works with satellite broadband service provider SkyFrames. The companies plan to make their combined services available to troops in Iraq during the upcoming holidays and, according to Vonage Executive Vice President Louis Holder, "could conceivably push this service out" to a wider audience, depending on its success.

Device Promises Phone Bill Relief
October 14, 2003
By Mark Kellner

I've just hung up on a phone call to an acquaintance in the state of Kerala, in India. We talked for about 10 minutes, and the sound quality was good. The other night, I'd had a chat with another colleague in the Philippines. Again, the sound was fine.

Domestically, I've called New York, California, Illinois, Michigan and even the District, all with ease and good-to-excellent sound quality.

I didn't use regular telephone service. Instead, I used a phone connected to a small black box, which in turn was connected to my broadband router. Going through the same cable Internet service that brings e-mail and Web pages, I dialed all over the world - and received calls - bypassing the phone companies and their high charges

Vonage Joins SkyFrames To Supply Broadband Telephony To U.S. Troops In Iraq

Vonage In Print News

October 14, 2003
By Staff

Vonage, a provider of broadband telephony, announced it is joining the grass roots effort initiated by SkyFrames to supply broadband telephony for U.S. troops in Iraq.

SkyFrames, a provider of low-cost, highly secure satellite broadband Internet services, and Vonage will provide the United States Armed Forces in Iraq with the ability to call home via broadband telephony over a wireless satellite connection during the holidays. As a result of numerous communications from military families unable to receive phone calls from their loved ones stationed in Iraq, SkyFrames sought to meet their communications need, realizing Vonage was the natural choice.

Vonage Starts Rallying Cry For Broadband Phones: Launches National Effort As Big

Vonage In Print News

October 13, 2003
By Deanna Zammit

NEW YORK -- With large communications companies mostly on the sidelines and smaller players focusing on highly targeted direct and online efforts, Vonage is hoping to take an early lead in the broadband-telephone field with a $15 million national campaign.

TV and radio work from New York shop The Gardner-Nelson Project portrays Vonage as the rallying point for a grassroots movement against traditional phone companies. Vonage provides phone service through the Internet for a flat monthly fee, a system known as Voice Over Internet Protocol or VoIP.

Between a Rock and a Hardplace

With their core voice businesses in decline, incumbent fixed-line operators are shifting to broadband.

IT IS hard to get excited about fixed-line phones. You plug them in, you dial a number, you get through, so what's new? But Vonage, a small company based in Edison, New Jersey, has rustled up some magic with its breathtakingly clever phone technology. It makes you realise just how limited existing fixed-line phones are, and how much internet
technology can do to shake up the business of providing boring old telephony.

PC Users Can Now Make Long-Distance Calls Free

Vonage In Print News

October 9, 2003
By Almar Latour and Peter Grant

Peter Clegg, an opera singer in Washington, D.C., is among the latest converts to a technology that may render much of the world's telecommunications infrastructure obsolete over the next decade or so.

He registered a few weeks ago for a global phone service provided by a tiny Stockholm-based start-up called Skyper Ltd. "It's free," Mr. Clegg says. "I like free." The service, called Skype, is available to anyone who goes to Skyper's Web site and downloads the company's software, which can then be used to make phone calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world.

These Tips can Help Frequent Travelers Ensure Smooth Trips, From Airport Security Checks to Hotel Telecommunications Connections

October 6, 2003

By Dave Gussow and Jules Allen

The last-minute dash to catch a plane is fading into memory.

Hardy road warriors have had to adjust to a new world of travel in the past few years. More security means getting to the airport earlier. Longer waits at airports mean potentially more idle hours. Fewer flights mean scheduling can be more of a headache.

Savvy business travelers are making the most of a difficult situation. And technology is playing a key role in helping them stay on schedule, remain connected and be productive.
