Vonage Dials In $35M VC Backing

Vonage In Print News

November 24, 2003
By Ryan Naraine

VOIP upstart Vonage today banked $35 million in venture capital funding to continue building out its DigitalVoice broadband phone service.

Vonage, which sells SIP-based VOIP service to ISPs and broadband users, said the latest cash infusion included a $12 million investment from New Enterprise Associates (NEA).

NEA, best known for its health care sector investments, is the first major VC to hitch its wagon to the Vonage train.

The Humble Phone Still Has The Allure

Vonage In Print News

November 24, 2003

By Lee Gomes

It wasn't that long ago that among the Silicon Valley smart set, Alexander Graham Bell's pride and joy was called "plain old-fashioned telephone service," or POTS.

The term was part affectionate, part dismissive. The assumption behind it was that the traditional voice-only telephone would soon wither and die, to be replaced by an Internet-enabled convergence of voice, video and what-have-you.

The backing from NEA, a powerful financier of more than 500 tech and medical companies from 3Com to Sepracor to WebEx, is the latest high-profile endorsement of Vonage's ambitious strategy to displace traditional telephone service providers.

 Cable Calling

In the last few years, the cable television industry has grown.

Once simply a way for people to get television programming and movie channels, cable providers have spent millions to upgrade their networks and add services, such as video-on-demand and high-speed Internet access.

Beginning Monday, America's Cell Phone Subscribers Can Keep Their Old Telephone

Vonage In Print News

November 23, 2003

By Ben Charny

Cell phone providers have spent years gearing up for what is expected to be a tumultuous three months, when an estimated 30 million subscribers will swap wireless carriers for a better monthly plan or coverage area.

The Federal Communications Commission ordered landline and cell phone companies to port telephone numbers in 1996. Landline phone companies complied in 1998. After years of delay, cell phone providers have all said they will implement number portability starting Monday.

Vonage - What Do You Pay To Stay Connected? So Many Choices! Here's Our Total Telecom Str

Chances are you are far more reachable today than you were five years ago. You may have two phone lines at home, a long-distance plan, Internet service, a cell phone, maybe even a beeper as well.

And you probably pay a stiff price for it all too.

According to the industry research group TNS Telecoms, the average U.S. household pays $149 a month for telecom services -- 30 percent more than five years ago.

Finding A Voice

November 21, 2003

By Matthew Clark

Resistance is futile. Voice over IP (VoIP) is the future.

Though they may disagree on where, when and how, practically any analyst, telecoms company or regulator will acknowledge that the future of voice communication lies with this soon-to-be omnipresent technology.

Europe's Largest Telecommunications Companies Face Big Revenue Losses

Vonage In Print News

November 19, 2003

By Taska Manzaroli

In Japan and the U.S., firms that provide high-speed Internet access, or broadband, are snaffling business from network operators by sending voice calls via the Web. In Europe, the companies that sell broadband are mostly the carriers themselves; while this could slow the take-up, it won't stop the bandwagon.

It's a development the likes of Deutsche Telekom AG (DT), BT Group PLC(BTY), France Telecom SA (FTE) and Royal KPN NV (KPN) can't ignore as they struggle to reverse revenue declines in their fixed-line business. They'll have to ensure they have products and prices to counter the newcomers as well as resolve internal conflicts in their phone and Internet units as they chase the same customers.
