In-Stat Says Cable Telephony Is An Integral Part Of "Triple Play" Bundle

November 26, 2003

By Staff

Cable telephony services continue to proliferate as cable TV operators expand their video, data, and voice service portfolios, reports In-Stat/MDR. According to the high-tech market research firm, worldwide cable telephony subscribers are on track to top the 10 million mark by the end of 2003, and are forecasted to rise to over 19 million in 2007. In addition to the growing number of users around the world, recent announcements marking the first US-based cable telephony service deployments using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, have made this year an important one for voice services in the cable industry.

Vonage In Print News

November 25, 2003

By Staff

Vonage Inc, an Edison, New Jersey-based provider of internet phone calls via cable lines, has raised $35m in a Series B round of funding, a sign that VCs are starting to take the concept of VoIP very seriously.

The funding round was led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA), with participation from Vonage's senior management. The company plans to add additional area codes to its areas of service, and anticipates expanding globally, first to Canada, and later next year into Europe.

Worldwide cable-telephony subscribers are on track to top the 10 million mark by the end of 2003 and are seen rising to more than 19 million in 2007 according to In-Stat/MDR, a sister company to Multichannel News.

The research firm said the most powerful market driver for cable telephony is the bundling of telephony service with existing digital-video and high-speed-data services.

 Vonage Receives $35 Million Investment

Vonage In Print News

November 25, 2003

By Susan Polyakova

Taking another step toward global expansion, Vonage announced Mon. it had more than doubled its capital base by closing a $35 million financing round led by New Enterprise Assoc. (NEA). The Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) provider, which said it had more than 70,000 lines in service and added more than 10,000 lines monthly, planned to use the investment to expand to Europe and Canada starting early next year. "We want to be the first in the [European] market," Vonage CFO John Rego told us. He said that with presence in 100 U.S. Metropolitan Service Areas (MSAs), "we have most of the country covered. We can complete the U.S. next year, and meanwhile start building networks in Europe and Canada."

It Is Better, Mark Twain Is Said To Have Observed

Vonage In Print News

November 25, 2003

By Peter Doralt

It is better, Mark Twain is said to have observed, to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt. Early believers in voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) must regret not heeding this advice. When introduced in the mid 1990s, the appeal of VoIP proved largely limited to nerds, costing investors who bet on it too soon dearly.

Internet Cafés Are Morale Booster For Troops In Iraq

    November 24, 2003

    By William Jackson

Thousands of U.S. soldiers in Iraq keep in daily touch with family and friends back home via Internet chats broadcast via satellite from troop tents.

“Before we had this, it was like being in the Dark Ages,” said Staff Sgt. Jose Matias of Oviedo, Fla., a supply officer with the 124th Infantry stationed in Balad in northern Iraq. Mail is slow, he said, and soldiers often must wait in line up to three hours to use a telephone. “I talked with my family every two or three weeks for five to 30 minutes,” Matias said.
