 Costly Confusion

Vonage In Print News

November 28, 2003

By Steve Forbes

Two recent court decisions underscore the crying need for Washington to clean up the increasingly harmful mess in telecommunications. Regulations and laws on federal and state levels still pretend the Internet does not exist and thus try to preserve artificial barriers between computers, telephones, television, radio, cable and satellites. This time-warp mentality explains why, by the beginning of 2004, a South Korean household will be able to get a hundred times the broadband capacity for an online personal computer at about the same cost an American household pays.

Telecom: Lots of Innovation, Little Growth: Even Wireless, Data Markets Feel Pin

Vonage In Print NewsNovember 28, 2003

By Mark Evans

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission issued its 2002 annual report on the telecom industry yesterday and to no one's surprise, there are few surprises.

Industry growth is negligible, the incumbent carriers still have more than 95% of the local telephone market while the Internet and wireless sectors are rolling along with double-digit growth. As Homer Simpson likes to say, "D'oh!"

Fearing Being Left Behind, Bells Develop Low Price Plans That Transmit Calls Over The Net

November 28, 2003

By Almar Latour

To fight competition from lost cost airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Air Lines started their own discount carriers. Now the telecom industry is adopting a similar flight plan.

Rattled by growing competition from cheap phone services relying on a technology called Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP, big regional bells companies say they are getting ready to offer their own discounted services.

Voice-Over-Internet Service Challenges Traditional Calling

November 28, 2003

By Dan Thanh Dang

It wasn't that long ago when any long-distance company peddling a low rate could persuade Jeff Pulver to switch. But these days, Pulver has no use for such money-saving deals.

By hooking up his phone to the broadband connection in his New York office, Pulver and his 20 employees make all their calls over the Internet, slicing a few thousand dollars off the telephone bill every month.

Cable telephony services continue to proliferate as cable TV operators expand their video, data, and voice service portfolios, reports In-Stat/MDR. According to the high-tech market research firm, worldwide cable telephony subscribers are on track to top the 10 million mark by the end of 2003, and are forecasted to rise to over 19 million in 2007.
