December 1, 2003

By Ellen Sheng

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The Internet telephony industry argued against regulation of their nascent industry as regulators convened Monday at a Federal Communications Commission forum in Washington.

VoIP Providers: Lay Off The Regulation

December 1, 2003

By Grant Gross

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) should take a mostly hands-off approach to regulating the VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) industry, so that VoIP can continue to grow and provide consumers with a choice as to which type of telephone service they use, a chorus of vendors told the FCC Monday.

Washington State Agency Enters VoIP Dispute

Vonage In Print News

December 1, 2003

By Linda Haugsted

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission is the latest state agency to mull whether it can — or should — regulate voice-over-Internet protocol telephony.

The agency will mediate a dispute between the Washington Exchange Carrier Association and LocalDial Corp. of Portland, Ore. WECA collects tariffs from long-distance providers and remits the money to telephone companies which carry the traffic.

FCC Looks At Phoning On Internet

November 30, 2003

By Martha McKay

Making phone calls over the Internet used to be strictly a computer geek activity.

And as such, regulators left it pretty much alone.

But these days, improved quality and cheap rates have pushed this technology closer to the mainstream.

Technology Makes Great Gifts For Everyone

November 30, 2003

Once upon a time, Thanksgiving meant counting our blessings. Now, Thanksgiving weekend means counting our money -- and then spending it. In that modern spirit, I'm going to note some tech-related items that crossed my path in recent months. Some might make good gifts for family and friends, or (shhhh) even yourself.

Answer: When it travels over the Internet.

That, at least, is what a new crop of voice-over-Internet protocol (VOIP) providers will argue Monday before the Federal Communications Commission at what could be a watershed forum.
