I knew I wanted Vonage, or an Internet-telephone service like it, when I opened my e-mail program at work and found my personal voice-mail messages neatly lined up as clickable sound-file attachments.

 Talk Is Cheaper

Vonage In Print News

December 10, 2003

By Aleksandra Todorova

The Set-Up

Good news for technophobes: You won't need any funky software or headsets. Just three simple pieces of equipment are required. First, a telephone, which can be the same one you use with your regular phone service. You'll plug this into a special adapter (a small box with a number of jacks where you plug in all the cables) that you'll get from your VoIP service provider. And you need a router — a device that allows you to connect two or more computers in a network that shares one Internet connection. This will enable you to talk on the phone while your computer is connected to the Internet. These days, you can buy a router for about $50. (And if you're using Vonage's Motorola VT 1000 adapter, you don't need a router because it comes with one.)

Wi-Fi-Only So-Called Mobile VOIP Phone Out Soon In Japan

December 10, 2003

By Carol Longino

Japanese ISP Livedoor will release an 802.11b-only VOIP phone around the turn of the year, and the company says it can be used with any 802.11b WLAN network. This isn't the first wireless VOIP phone, but it seems to be the first that's sold as part of a consumer service. But we've got to ask just one question -- what's the point? (Thanks, dottocomu)

Phone Service Coming To The Web

Vonage In Print News

December 10, 2003

By Tamara Gignac

Canadian cable companies are gearing up to roll out Internet-based telephone service -- a move that could shake up competition and drive prices down for consumers.
Rogers Communications -- Canada's biggest cable TV operator -- said Tuesday it expects to break into the telephone market in about a year, using voice-over-Internet technology in which voice signals travel over high-speed computer networks instead of phone lines.
