Big Telecom Companies Now Boosting Internet Phone Service

December 13, 2003

By Roy Bragg

Five years ago, using a computer to make a phone call was fraught with anxiety.

Armed with sound-equipped PCs, users could have conversations converted to digital packets and sent across the same Internet networks that let them surf Web pages, send and receive e-mail and download music files. They avoided the traditional phone networks completely.

VoIP: Here, There, Everywhere

December 12, 2003

By Mark McClusky

Fans of Internet telephony will soon have a significantly larger selection of providers, as some of the biggest fishes in the telecommunications industry rush to roll out services.

On Thursday, AT&T, the largest U.S. long-distance provider, put its weight behind the popular technology, announcing that it will begin selling telephone service using voice over Internet protocol.

Longer Obscure, VoIP Is Catching On With Major Telecoms

December 12, 2003

By Dan Richman

Save 20 percent on your phone bill and get cool features that just aren't possible with conventional phone service?

That sounded good to Bainbridge Island's Bob Silver, who in September began using a once-obscure technology that suddenly seems irresistible to major telecom players: Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.

Consumers Wired About Web Calls

December 12, 2003

By Derek Rose

It's the beginning of the end for plain old telephone service.

Even before AT&T announced yesterday that it would offer Internet-based phone calls next year, New Yorkers already had begun junking 20th-century copper wires in favor of cyberspace dialing.

AT&T Move To Net-Based Calls Rattles Industry

December 12, 2003

By Jeff May

It's the end of the telecommunications world as we know it.

Qwest Communications, cable operator Time Warner and AT&T all embraced major pushes into Internet-based phone service for consumers this week, a trend that has troubling implications for old-line business models in the phone industry.

Eyeing Savings And Growth, More Companies Take Little-Regulated Internet Telephony Seriously

December 12, 2003

By Jube Shriver

WASHINGTON — The telecommunications industry didn't seem all that impressed in 1995 when a small New Jersey start-up called VocalTec Communications Inc. developed a way to send ordinary telephone calls over the Internet.

Now, phone companies nationwide are heralding Internet telephony as the technology that could kick-start competition and pull the $400-billion telecommunications business out of its years-long slump.

How Do Internet Phone Calls Work?

Vonage In Print News

How do Internet phone calls work?

AT&T's announcement Thursday of the first phase in 2004 of a national rollout of Internet phone service is the clearest evidence yet of a coming revolution in how Americans will communicate. The technology, voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP, has the potential to provide cheaper phone service with more new features. It also poses a competitive threat to the conventional phone business. USA TODAY telecommunications reporter Andrew Backover answers some of the questions about the new technology.

The Death Star Storms Into Consumer Net Phones

Vonage In Print News

December 12, 2003

VoIP pioneers such as Vonage Inc, which boasts 75,000 pretty happy users, have been touted as revolutionary upstarts which would mortally threaten the incumbent telcos. Vonage offers cut-price telephony using your existing broadband connection for as little as $14.99 a month, and throws in features familiar to GSM cellphone subscribers, such as voicemail and caller ID, that usually carry a premium on landlines.

VOIP: A Personal Experience

December 12, 2003

By Gregory J. Teets

It's widely known that technology analysts like to try new things, especially when there's a device or new technology involved. I'm doubly cursed since both my wife and I are engineers by schooling, which greatly amplifies the level of technical curiosity.
