Will VoIP Disconnect The Telephone Companies?

December 18, 2003

By Art Jahnke

When historians look back at the year 2003, they may well see it as the beginning of the end of the telephone-at least, the beginning of the end of the telephone as it was known for most of the 20th century. Is that sad? Is witnessing the obsolescence of the technology that let us “reach out and touch someone” a little like watching a dear old auntie relocate to a gated community in South Florida? Or is this the deliverance we’ve been waiting for? After all, this dear old auntie may be best remembered for forging the largest monopoly in the history of American business.

If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em

The future of fixed-line telephony has suddenly become apparent.

Telephones, at least of the fixed-line variety, have been much the same for decades. Buttons replaced rotary dials; caller ID appeared;otherwise little has changed. But fixed-line phones are now about to be transformed, thanks to the internet.

A Voice In The Calling Wilderness

December 18, 2003

By David Leonhardt

MAYBE you have had the fantasy while sitting at home for an entire afternoon and waiting for a 10-minute visit from the phone company to install a new telephone line. Or maybe the dream has come to you while were you on hold, once again, hoping to resolve the latest billing mix-up caused by Verizon, SBC or whichever local phone company dominates your market.

Will Telephone Calls Be Free?

December 16, 2003

By Michael Rogers

The folks who shook up the music world with KaZaA want to make telephone calls free. Do they have a chance?

Technologists used to predict that in a true broadband Internet world the cost of sending voice telephone calls would become so low that it would no longer be worth billing for them. Now, in a flurry of year-end announcements, everyone from start-ups to Ma Bell herself has announced their intention to deliver voice over the Internet. So when does the free part start?
