New Calling For Cable Providers
Catskill -- Television Companies Get Into Telephone Market

December 26, 2003

By Ken Aaron

Catskill -- Television companies get into telephone In recent weeks, some of the biggest companies in the cable television universe have rolled out plans to compete with entrenched telephone companies.

Phone Call To The Future

December 26, 2003

By Jerri Stroud

Time Warner offers digital phone. Vonage Holdings sells broadband voice. Other companies call their service voice over packet or IP telecommunications. But to what all are referring is voice over Internet protocol: telephone service transmitted over data networks.

"Everyone is making up new words because they decided that the best way not to sell something was to call it VoIP," said Judy Reed Smith, chief executive of ACM Group Inc., a technology research firm.

O-HO-HOME electronics!

It's Christmas Day, and you know what that means. All the good little boys and girls woke up this morning to find digital cameras, DVD burners and BlackBerries under the tree.

And all the bad little boys and girls got spam.

Probably quite a few people, seeing as how packetized voice has had nearly as much media coverage recently as Saddam's hole, pardon the expression.

It's hard to believe that this is the last issue of Fiber Optics News for the year. Twelve months ago, I thought the be-all and end-all topic for 2003 was going to be fiber-to-the-home (FTTH). Indeed it was, although it was joined by
such other acronyms as VoIP and UNE-P along a whole slew of other buzzwords that set the pace of our editorial coverage
