As Cable Ops and Others Jump Into New Phone Frontier, Regulators Eye Turf Defenses

January 5, 2004

By Linda Haugsted

Telecommunications companies are jumping into voice-over-Internet protocol telephony with both feet — even though, in terms of regulation, they don't know precisely where those feet will land.

There Is Much More Happening At CES. Here Is A Small Sample

January 4, 2004

By Steve Kruschen

January 4, 2004 - As you read in my earlier article about the upcoming International CES which is this week in Las Vegas, this show is bigger than it has been in many, many years.

I thought I would give those of you interested in the nuts and bolts of the show a look at some of what else is new that I am looking forward to learning about. The best way is to share pieces of a small sampling of the hundreds of emails I have received so you can click and go on the things
that pique your interest. Please DO NOT email me with questions about any of the following. Dig and look things up, as I will. I regret that I will not have the time to answer questions about any of the teases that follow, but I
will follow-up and provide additional info as time permits throughout the coming months. Stay tuned to MrGadget.com!

North American MSOs Target Cable IP Telephony Rollouts In 2004

January 1, 2004

By Alan Breznick

Delivering high-speed data is simply not enough for many MSOs anymore. With cable modems now in more than 17 million North American homes and that number still growing at about 1 million homes per quarter, more operators are actively exploring the next generation of IP-based services to offer over their fat broadband pipes.

People To Watch-Jeffrey Citron

January 1, 2004

By Marion Asnes, Jon Birger, Jonah Friedman,
Megan Johnston and Cybele Weisser

This Year Internet Phone Calls will hit prime time. Here’s why.

At long last, making calls over the Internet is becoming a reality. Among the players driving this is Jeffrey Citron, who heads up Vonage, a privately held company that offers unlimited local and long-distance phone service over the net (VOIP) for as little as $35 as month. In October a Minnesota court ruled that Vonage should not be regulated as a telephone company (for now), a position FCC chairman Michael Powell shared. The baby bells are striking back. In November, three said they would roll out VOIP service in 2004.
