California Eases Up On Net Phone Rules

January 5, 2004

By Ben Charny

The California Public Utilities Commission will now take its time to decide whether to regulate Internet telephone service providers, according to a commissioner.

The commission was "acting first and asking questions later" last September, when it told six Internet phone companies to get the same license that landline phone companies need to operate in California, Commissioner Susan P. Kennedy said Monday.

Why VoIP Is Going To Be A Big Deal This Year

January 5, 2004

By David Coursey

In the days before Christmas, three major communications companies--Time Warner, Qwest, and AT&T--announced plans to start selling Internet-based telephone services. They were joining other telecom giants--SBC and Verizon among them--who'd previously committed to doing the same thing.

A Debate On Web Phone Service

January 5, 2004

By Matt Richtel

Charles Davidson, a self-proclaimed gadget freak in Tallahassee, Fla., began using Internet-based telephone service last week. He can call anyone - not just the other 100,000 pioneers around the nation using such service, but any of the millions of people who use conventional telephones, like his parents in Elizabethton, Tenn.

It was the year the Internet officially stopped being fun.

In 2003, the festering problems of spam, spyware, viruses, worms and pop-ups boiled over, making the online experience annoying at best, financially and emotionally destructive at worst.

Internet Calling On The Leading Edge Of New Technology

Vonage In Print News

January 5, 2004

By Jeff Gelles

(KRT) - Remember all the talk a few years back about the "technology dividend" - the savings we'd someday reap from various kinds of technological progress?

Instead, it often seems as if all we do is pay extra for neat new stuff we just can't live without: computers, cell phones, video recorders, iPods.

Edison, N.J.-based VoIP provider Vonage 12/23 announced separate partnerships with Ygnition Networks, which provides broadband service to luxury apartments, and a consortium of telecom providers known as Associated Network Partners Inc. Failure To Quickly Respond To Internet Telephony's Rising Popularity -- At Home And At Work -- Could Cost Incumbent Telcos Plenty

January 5, 2004

By Jane Black

Bob Johnson is one of the people who are about to turn the phone industry upside down. The director of telecommunications and network services at Dartmouth College, Johnson has contracted with a traditional telco for years to provide the school with phone service. When his current contract expires in March, though, Johnson expects to switch to one of the hot VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) outfits that are lining up to steal customers from traditional carriers.
