Justice Dept., FBI Want Consumers To Pay The Cost

March 13, 2004

By Dan Eggen and Jonathan Krim

The Justice Department wants to significantly expand the government's ability to monitor online traffic, proposing that providers of high-speed Internet service should be forced to grant easier access for FBI wiretaps and other electronic surveillance, according to documents and government officials.

A petition filed this week with the Federal Communications Commission also suggests that consumers should be required to foot the bill.

Law enforcement agencies have been increasingly concerned that fast-growing telephone service over the Internet could be a way for terrorists and criminals to evade surveillance. But the petition also moves beyond Internet telephony, leading several technology experts and privacy advocates yesterday to warn that many types of online communication, including instant messages and visits to Web sites, could be covered.

Unicast: Web Commercials Don't Annoy Most Users

March 12, 2004

By Brian Morrissey

An initial study of 1,750 Internet users' reactions to new TV-like Internet commercials found just 28 percent said they were annoying.

Unicast, the maker of the Web commercial format, sponsored the study by New York marketing research firm Dynamic Logic. It looked at reactions to the first wave of 30-second Unicast Web commercials run in mid-January by Honda, Pepsi and Vonage.

The Unicast ad is a two-megabyte video that plays when a user clicks to move to a new page on a Web site. Fifteen Web publishers signed on to run the ads, including ESPN.com, ABCNews.com and CBS Sportsline. The initial six-week test of the ad served more than 85 million impressions. Most of the ads were TV commercials repurposed to run on Web sites.

Vonage Offers Free Calls To Ireland On St. Patrick’s Day

March 12, 2004

By Staff

Leprechauns, those tiny Irish sprites that dress in strange clothes and seem to show themselves around St. Patrick’s Day, are said to store a large pot of gold at the end of every rainbow. This St. Patrick’s Day, Vonage - The Broadband Phone Company, offers another money saving option in their “pot of customer features” - FREE phone calls to Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day. Unfortunately, Leprechauns are notoriously hard to capture, so getting your hands on the gold can be near impossible as a means to amassing your fortune! Just another reason for telephone customers to keep their phones, but lose their old phone companies.

We Interrupt This Search To Show A Full-Motion Ad

March 11, 2004

By Bob Tedeschi

IF you missed the commercials served up 80 million times recently in the Internet's biggest test of television-style video ads, stay tuned - or beware.

Encouraged by the initial results, advertisers have begun a new round. An online survey of 1,700 Internet users who saw the full-motion commercials, which ran from late January until late February, showed that viewers found them less annoying than some marketers had expected. Indeed, just 28 percent found them annoying - compared with 38 percent of TV viewers, on average, who found commercials annoying in three separate studies. The survey on Web commercials was paid for by the advertisers.
