VoIP Goes Open Source: Talk To Become Cheap

March 26, 2004

By Staff

Mumbai, Pingtel Corp., a provider of SIP-based Voice-over-IP (VoIP) solutions for enterprise communications, will be releasing on Monday its Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) software platform into the Open Source world.

The objective: to do for IP telephony what Apache and Linux have rendered for enterprise servers - bring the technology to the masses at next to no cost. The company has already moved its entire enterprise communications suite, including the company’s SIPxchange IP PBX platform, into Open Source domain.

The Spread Of Broadband Means That The Internet Is Poised To Revolutionise The Telecommunications Market, Says Victor Keegan

March 26, 2004

British Telecom's price-cutting skirmish with Carphone Warehouse and other rivals is, in every sense, a phoney war.

It's not just that the cuts are not always what they seem (such as trading possible lower call charges for a higher rental), but that they are also obscuring some interesting things that are happening behind the smokescreens.

Calling The Next Tech Challenge

March 26, 2004

By Robert J. Samuelson

Although you may never have heard of VoIP, it's the wave of the future. With VoIP -- voice-over-Internet protocol -- you can use the Internet for phone calls. When the wave arrives is anyone's guess, but VoIP heralds upheaval. Never before have there been so many ways to get phone service, use the Internet or receive video images. The challenge for government and business is to convert this apparent mayhem into an investment boom that, unlike the ill-fated telecom bubble of the late 1990s, delivers lasting benefits for consumers and investors.

Once upon a time, telecommunications was devoid of choice and competition. You got phone service from one place, television from another -- and of course there was no Internet. That world is long gone.

Patience Is Required For New Products

March 26, 2004

By Victoria Shannon

Paris - When you think of brand names that dominate innovative consumer technology, it's easy to group the leaders by continent. Asia has Sony, DoCoMo, Samsung, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Canon and Panasonic. The United States has Microsoft, Apple, Intel, Google, Hewlett-Packard and Kodak. And IBM and Yahoo and Palm and AOL. Not to mention the entire Silicon Valley, a kind of brand name in its own right.

Europe has ... Well, Europe has a market of more than 40 countries, scores of languages, countless trade barriers, complex regulations and high labor costs. Perhaps those are some of the reasons that Europeans are usually on the short end of the stick when it comes time for the tech visionaries to introduce their new products and services.

VoIP Heads For The Mainstream

March 26, 2004

By Erika Morphy

"Once consumers realize how easy it can be to make calls on an Internet broadband connection -- basically, all one has to do is install an adapter to make calls on a regular phone -- adoption will increase significantly," says Jon Arnold, telecommunications analyst with Frost & Sullivan.

For the most part, VoIP has been a tool to help call-center managers deploy agents more efficiently at lower cost. Some brave businesses also have deployed this technology, but they are relatively few in number. Now, though, that is set to change, as AT&T has announced plans to accelerate and expand its VoIP rollout for business users.

Coming Soon, The Do-Everything Wireless Phone

March 24, 2004

By Bob Brewin

Get ready for the do-everything wireless phone, and headsets, too, as manufacturers and developers in Atlanta at the annual Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association event work to cram the functions of cordless phones, cellular handsets and IP telephones into one portable device.

Craig Mathias, an analyst at Far Point Group, predicts that combined multiband cordless, cellular and voice-over-IP (VoIP) wireless LAN phones will be widely available by 2006.

At the chip level, Texas Instruments Inc. introduced a new, low-power Wi-Fi chip set for use in dual cellular/wireless LAN phones. TI's chip set can be configured to work under the 802.11 b/g standards (11Mbit/sec. and 54Mbit/sec., respectively, in the 2.4-GHz band) or to support those standards in addition to 802.11a (54Mbit/sec. in the 5-GHz band).
