Telephony Market Catches On, As Calls Come Via Internet

Tacoma, Wash., Telephony Market Catches On, As Calls Come Via Internet

April 5, 2004

By Marcelene Edwards

High-speed Internet access is making telephone calls a lot cheaper and providing more fancy features.

Some consumers are already paying just $35 a month or less for unlimited calls to anywhere in the United States.
They also get free voice mail and free caller ID. Under some plans, you can keep your current number. And voice mails can pop up in your e-mail inbox.

The technology -- called Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP -- uses the Internet to send telephone calls. It's beginning to replace traditional telephone services in homes and businesses around the country, including the South Sound.

Push On To Make VOIP Open Source; SIPfoundry Initiative Pulls Together Several Projects

April 5, 2004

By Paula Musich

Several IP telephony veterans are banding together to organize the first major open-source community concentrating on VOIP technology.

Pingtel Corp., of Woburn, Mass., is spearheading the initiative, dubbed SIPfoundry, by releasing its SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) software platform into the open-source world as well as by forming a nonprofit organization to give legal and technical assistance to open-source developers working with voice over IP. Pingtel's mission, officials said, is to do for IP telephony what Apache and Linux have done for enterprise servers.

Two Hot Technology Trends - Wi-Fi Wireless Internet Access And Voice-Over-Internet Service - Could Come Together Soon With Wi-Fi Phones That Promise Free Or Very Inexpensive Calls

April 4, 2004

Two hot technology trends - Wi-Fi wireless Internet access and voice-over-Internet service - could come together soon with Wi-Fi phones that promise free or very inexpensive calls.

Voice-over-Internet carrier Vonage Holdings Corp. is testing Wi-Fi handsets it hopes to sell by fall. The devices would look like cordless phones and would likely be used in homes with Wi-Fi networks.

Rival Net2Phone Corp. is six months into a test of technology aimed at turning Microsoft Corp.'s Pocket PCs into Wi-Fi cellphone replacements.

High-Speed Calling: Internet-Based Phone Service Goes Mainstream

    April 4, 2004

    By Eve Mitchell

Noel Frank Likes to talk to his friends and family both in the U.S. and Canada. Now, the Oakland resident has found a way to talk to them as much as he wants without racking up a big long-distance bill.

Frank is one of the growing number of consumers making inexpensive voice calls via his high-speed Internet connection and a regular phone instead of the traditional phone network that has been around since the telephone was invented more than 125 years ago.

"I have family spread out around the U.S. and Canada. That was one of the reasons. And the other reason I'm doing it is for entrepreneurial activity. Some time the business I'm working on may end up on the East Coast," said Frank.

    Telephony Now

You got a celly and a two-way, plus broadband at work and in your living room. You barely use your home phone, and wish you could dead it. With the Vonage voiceover broadband service, you can. Connect the black box to your existing broadband line and to your phone, and for as little as $14.99 per month, you have a home phone with caller ID, call-waiting and voicemail (you can even check messages over email). The kicker is, it's portable: Anywhere in the world you can connect to broadband, people can reach you--at you "home" number. vonage.com, BeoCom 1 phone by Bang& Olufsen, $595, bang-olufsen.com.

Everything A Road Warrior Needs To Know About This New Technology

Voice Over IP for Mobile Professionals

When said out loud, "VoIP" sounds like something that should be quickly followed by, "Excuse me; it must be that burrito I ate for lunch."

But get used to it, because in the coming months, with AT&T and other companies entering the nascent market, you'll be hearing more about VoIP--short for Voice over Internet Protocol. And I'd advise you to listen, because the lower costs and portability of phone features that VoIP offers makes the technology a potentially compelling new telecommunications alternative for mobile professionals.

    Microsoft Scores In VoIP Arena

    April 1, 2004

    By Staff

Microsoft is trying to marry its newly-unveiled Windows CE 5.0 platform for embedded devices to the voice-over-IP (VoIP) arena and several vendors have answered with, "I do."

The new platform for embedded devices, which will be ready for original equipment manufacturers later this year, has significantly more complete VoIP capabilities. Vendors such as NEC and LG Electronics said this week they will manufacture phones based on the platform.

In addition, VoIP vendor Vonage said it would offer its customers softphone software based on Windows CE. Softphone software enables devices such as handhelds to operate as VoIP phones.

Rise Of Internet Services Causes Stir Among Phone Companies, Regulators

    April 1, 2004

    By Kevin Rademacher

Las Vegas businessman Maurice Gallagher watched with interest recently as telephone companies struggled to extract meaning from a U.S. Appeals Court ruling.

The order, which is subject to a U.S. Supreme Court appeal, could limit competitors' access to the telephone networks created by former monopoly providers. Those dominant providers hailed the ruling as a return to fair play.

Competitors, and some consumer groups, said it could put an end to competition and spark higher phone rates.
