Consumers Eager For Internet Phone Service

April 9, 2004

By Harry Berkowitz

A new survey provides encouragement to the cable TV and telecommunications companies that are rushing to launch discount phone services using Internet technology.

But it also shows what a difficult time traditional phone companies may have in trying to hang on to their customers in the face of new competition.

One in three consumers would switch from their existing land-line phone service to Internet-based phone service for a discount of 20 percent or more, according to the Gallup Organization survey, which was commissioned by the investment firm UBS.

Telephone Values Can Pour In Through DSL

April 8, 2004

By Cheryl Currid

This may sound strange, but you could hire your cable company to be your telephone company today.

Or you could drop your voice lines and talk over your DSL broadband line.

Or you could get a new phone number with a New York or San Francisco area code that rings directly to your Houston home office.

And these services are available today.

WI-FI Phones Could Mean Cheaper Calls

April 8, 2004

By Staff

Two hot technology trends -- WI-FI wireless internet access and voice-over-internet service -- could come together soon with WI-FI phones that promise free or very inexpensive calls.

Voice-over-Internet carrier Vonage Holdings Corp. is testing Wi-Fi handsets it hopes to sell by fall. The devices would look like cordless phones and would likely be used in homes with Wi-Fi networks.

Sure, We Wouldn’t Mind Having A Vonage WiFi Phone That We Could Use To Make Cheap Phone Calls From Any Hotspot

April 8, 2004

By Staff

Sure, we wouldn’t mind having a Vonage WiFi phone that we could use to make cheap phone calls from any hotspot, but what we really want is for them to come out with a softphone (a software version of the service) that’ll run on our Treo 600. Sprint’s PCS Vision network is probably just fast enough to be able to make Voice over IP calls, and we’d be able to use Vonage’s unlimited long-distance calling service.

U.S. Internet Telephony Company Vonage Is Gearing Up To Start Services In The U.K. And Switzerland

April 8, 2004

By Taska Manzaroli

BERLIN (Dow Jones)--U.S. Internet telephony company Vonage is gearing up to start services in the U.K. and Switzerland in the third quarter and won't stop its European drive there, Chief Financial Officer John Rego said.

Vonage has gained more than 130,000 customers since its creation in 2001, and over 5 million calls per week are made using its flat-rate phone service. The company raised $40 million in financing in February, saying it would use the cash to accelerate expansion abroad.

Road Trip: High-Tech Gadgets Keep Many In Touch Even On Vacation

April 6, 2004

By Karen Bells

For the gadget lovers of the world, it's a glorious time to be alive. And there's almost nowhere they don't take their toys.

"I'd never go on vacation and not stay connected," said Subhas Patel, managing director of the Symmes Township-based Keystone Hotel Group. "Most of my trips are both business and pleasure. So even if I'm on vacation I still have to be available -- I'm still kind of on the fire-alarm list."

Patel used to travel with just his cell phone and personal digital assistant (PDA), leaving his laptop at home because of the inconvenience and the fear of losing it and all the important work information it contained. But now he's comfortable traveling with a laptop again.

Vonage Offers Internet Phone Service In Canada, Star Reports

April 6, 2004

By Staff

April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Vonage Holdings Corp., a closely held U.S. telephone company, is offering cheaper phone services in Canada by routing calls over the Internet, challenging Primus Telecommunications Group Inc., the Toronto Star reported.

Vonage is the second company in Canada to offer the residential service, called Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP, the newspaper said. Primus was the first when it introduced its TalkBroadband Internet phone service in January.

When was the last time you ooohhed and aaahed at your telephone? Probably never, right? Because let's face it, the traditional home phone may be amazingly reliable, but its coolness factor is almost zero.

This might be the year that changes.

Internet phone service -- where you make calls through your broadband Internet connection using a regular telephone -- is picking up steam. And for the first time since mobile phones hit the market, the technology could make people seriously rethink Alexander Graham Bell's 127-year-old invention.
