Internet Phone Service Battle On: Second Firm In Market Likely To Be Forerunner Of Many

April 16, 2004

By Peter Wilson

The digital dukes are now up in the Vancouver and Victoria Internet telephone marketplace.

A second company, Vonage Canada, has joined Primus Canada in the battle to win the hearts, minds and high-speed Net connections of cutting-edge phone users in the two cities.

On Wednesday, Vonage Canada, a subsidiary of New Jersey-based Vonage Holdings Corp, announced it was offering Voice over Internet Protocol service (VoIP), starting at $19.99 for 500 minutes of service to anywhere in Canada and the United States.

VoIP, which means the transmission of phone calls over the Internet, is now felt by its proponents to be a mainstream-ready product.

Internet Phone Business Reveals New Challenges
Albany -- Hearing Focuses On Fact New Telecom Firms Are Not Regulated, Taxed In State

April 15, 2004

By Sara Clemenc

Sign up for Internet-based phone service and you can get heaps of long distance and local calls, plus extras such as voice mail, caller ID and your choice of dozens of area codes -- all for less than the regular telephone company would charge.

But those newfangled telecom companies aren't regulated or taxed in New York state. Customers don't pay the service charge that helps maintain 911 service. In other words, the technology has changed, but the regulations haven't.

Some believe the disconnect threatens phone reliability and rates for New Yorkers.

Panel Explores Phone 'Crisis'

April 15, 2004

By Yancy Roy

ALBANY - New York’s hard-wired telephone service is entering a “crisis” - facing intense competition from wireless companies and a burgeoning Internet telephone service - which may radically alter the telecommunications landscape, said an Assemblyman who held hearings Wednesday.

With Verizon Communications Inc. and others planning to sell local phone lines, it’s possible a stock speculator with more interest in turning over assets than running a phone company could take over, said Assemblyman Richard Brodsky. Such a company could take the upstate phone system into bankruptcy as a way of shedding high-cost services - leaving customers in hard-to-reach or poor areas in the lurch, said the Democrat from Greenburgh, Westchester County.

Telecoms Struggle With Impact Of Internet Calls

April 15, 2004

By Justin Hyde

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - With Internet phone services signing up thousands of new customers a day, telecom industry observers are beginning to question how well the old local phone companies will defend themselves against a growing throng of competitors.

So far, cable companies and firms like Vonage have only nibbled at the edges of the local telephone market with voice over Internet Protocol service, or VOIP, winning about 250,000 customers.

But as more households sign up for broadband Internet service, and larger players such as AT&T Corp, unveil their VOIP service, executives and analysts see the threat to the Baby Bells rising.

TechBytes: Voice Over IP

April 15, 2004

By Brett Larson

Voice over IP is a new twist on telephone service.
With it, you can make phone calls over the Internet, and now do it without a computer, just a broadband connection.

I recently tested Vonage VoIP service: easy to set up, and service that worked like my regular phone. For $35 a month you get unlimited local and long distance calling. But, should you Internet connection go down, your phone stops working, consider that when you consider the savings.

New York- Vonage launches eight spots today that position the broadband phone service as “Your telephone company’s worst nightmare.” The work is the first by Korey Kay & Partners in New York, which won the account in March. In the commercials, a minicassette player reveals desperate messages left by former executives at big telephone companies, detailing how Vonage’s low-cost service toppled their companies and careers, and ruined their lives. CMO Dean Harris has said his 2004 ad budget would be about $20 million.
