Vonage To Offer Wi-Fi Phone

June 14, 2004

By Greg Scoblete

Edison, N.J. — Internet telephony company Vonage will offer a Wi-Fi-enabled VoIP phone in the fourth quarter to capitalize on what Michael Tribolet, executive VP/operations, said is the growing adoption of wireless home networks.

The Wi-Fi VoIP phone will compliment Vonage’s current broadband phone offering, which connects a regular home phone to a multi-terminal adapter (MTA), which is in turn connected to a cable/DSL modem. While the current device can work with a cordless phone if the base station is connected to the MTA, Tribolet said the Wi-Fi phone will incorporate the adapter in the handset, giving consumers one less piece of equipment to install.

Vonage Plans Q4 Launch In UK

June 11, 2004

By Ray Le Maistre

London - VON Europe - If the British public doesn't know about VOIP just yet, they likely will do soon. Hot on the heels of BT Group plc's (NYSE: BTY - message board; London: BTA) VOIP trial announcement comes the news that voice-over-broadband player Vonage Holdings Corp. is set to launch a service in the U.K. in the fourth quarter of this year (see BT Moves Ahead With Mega Project ).

Vonage's executive VP of product development, Louis Holder, told delegates at the VON Europe event in London that BT's consumer VOIP announcement "has validated the market," and that he is "investigating the market space," noting that the U.K. is currently adding about 40,000 new broadband subscribers per week at present.

Finally, A Free Market For Telecom With Rules That Favor Baby Bell Rivals Set To Expire, Technology -- Not The Government -- Will Level The Overcrowded Playing Field

June 10, 2004

By Steve Rosenbush

When it comes to assigning blame for the telecom meltdown, there are plenty of obvious candidates. Was it the fault of Bernie Ebbers, who now faces criminal charges related to bankrupt and scandal-scarred WorldCom (now MCI)? Was it Jack Grubman, the Salomon Brothers (C ) analyst who played both sides of the fence, covering WorldCom and other upstarts while helping to "sculpt" the industry as an investment banker? Was it former Drexel Burnham banker Gary Winnick, whose Global Crossing (GLBC ) empire was tarnished by bankruptcy and scandal? They all had a hand in creating the financial mess, which wiped out $2 trillion in capital and cost the economy several hundred thousand jobs.

Clearing The Way For Widespread Residential VoIP

June 10, 2004

By Micaela Giuhat

VoIP will explode into widespread deployment across North American this year, changing the way telephone calls are made and received more radically than any technology that’s been put into place in the last 100 years. At the same time, VoIP will bring cost efficiencies for carriers and new services and conveniences for consumers.

The new technology will eventually dominate what has been – and promises to continue to be for many years to come. This is thanks to the embedded infrastructure of existing telecommunications carriers – a lucrative $80 billion annual voice services market. Because RBOCs and ILECs have a vested interest in maintaining existing infrastructure for switched telephony services, it’s unlikely that VoIP will transform the way the phone industry runs overnight.

VON Highlights Disruptive Tendencies Of VOIP

June 9, 2004

By Matthew Broersma

LONDON — Traditional telecommunications providers, tied to their lucrative fixed voice services, are in danger of being swamped by innovative technology emerging from the fast-paced voice-over-IP sector, an analyst said Tuesday at the VON Europe conference here.

Arguing that fragmentation is now the name of the game for telecom services, James Enck, global telecom strategist with Daiwa Securities SMBC Europe Ltd., said consumers are moving away from traditional voice services to Internet communications tools such as instant messaging and social networking. These trends shouldn't be dismissed as teenage fads, Enck said—they point the way to a world where the current business models for voice no longer work, which could mean trouble for telcos that don't adapt fast enough.

Schulz demonstrated a Vonage VoIP call via EV-DO technology, brand-named Broadband Access, Tuesday morning as part of a breakfast panel sponsored by the New Millennium Research Council.

TELECOM: Internet Telephony Expected To Lead Wave Of New; Services

June 8, 2004

By David Hatch

Voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP), a technology touted by its backers as nothing short of revolutionary, represents the first wave of Internet products to be deployed in the near future that industry experts believe could alter the communications marketplace.

VoIP, essentially phone service over high-speed Internet pipes, is creating sizable buzz in telecommunications circles because it offers lower prices and more options for users. Riding the technology wave is Edison, N.J.-based Vonage, which already commands 51 percent of the Internet telephony market, estimated to be at 300,000 to 350,000 lines.
