Pushing The Newest Upgrade -- And An Older One
From Vonage, A Chance To Once Again Make Local Calls Without Area Codes

July 8, 2004

By Peter J. Howe

As one of the leading US ''voice over Internet protocol" companies, Vonage Holdings Corp. offers cutting-edge telephone services like unlimited broadband calls for $30 a month and voice messages in e-mail.

Now it is promoting something decidedly old-fashioned -- seven-digit dialing of local calls. That simple convenience disappeared three years ago from Massachusetts -- and many other states recently -- as regulators began requiring callers to punch in 10 digits for all calls, even to a number within the same area code.

Vote For VoIP: The Campaign Results

July 8, 2004

By Chip Howard

If 1000 polltakers at last month's Supercomm 2004 show are correct, the voice-over-IP craze is not just on the horizon, it's already here. Some 91% of respondents to Vote for VoIP, a poll co-presented by Telephony and Spirent Communications at the show, agreed the VoIP revolution has indeed begun.

VoIP Vendors Want Freedom

July 8, 2004

By Mark S. Sullivan

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Some of the companies offering early Voice-over-IP service would prefer being regulated by the federal government, not by the states, saying they would be better able to innovate and keep costs down under such an arrangement.

Representatives of seven telecommunications firms say they prefer central regulation by the Federal Communications Commission to living under the same rules that regulate telephone service. They addressed the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications and the Internet earlier this week.

Cellphone Courtesy Is Lacking

July 8, 2004

Digital Manners

It's other people, almost all of them, who are rude. I don't do rude things.

So say cellphone users in recent surveys sponsored by AT&T Wireless Services Inc. and Sprint Corp. The polls found that pretty much everyone thinks that other people are sorely lacking in cellphone manners. Yet more than 95% think their own manners are just fine all or most of the time, according to the AT&T Wireless survey.

Web Callers

July 11, 2004

By Will Rodgers

As someone who tracks down overpayments for others, Alan Bell is always looking for ways to cut his own expenses.
So the Plant City resident didn't hesitate to drop the traditional land-line telephone service at his home-based business to start making and receiving calls over the Internet - at a savings of about $250 each month.

``We've saved a considerable amount of money for a small business,'' Bell said. ``I have no problem with it.''

Rivals Line Up For Internet Phone Service Race

July 12, 2004

By Urvaksh Karkaria

As Gulliver stirs, the Lilliputians in the nascent Internet phone service business are bracing for a not-so-even showdown.

Verizon Communications plans to invest about $3 billion over the next two years to beef up its broadband service, which will include launching nationwide phone service using Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.New York-based Verizon could be viewed as the powerful sea captain from the novel “Gulliver’s Travels” as the company lumbers into the high-speed Internet phone business, attempting to fend off the cable competitors and Lilliputian startups snipping at its market share.

CTAM Preview: Near-Term Technologies

July 12, 2004

By Leslie Ellis

On Independence Day, we invited a few friends over for a cookout. Just into the second mojito, a noticeable commotion permeated the scene.

The best way to describe it is “cell phone athletics.” (They called it “mobile personal media.”)

It seemed to be all about snapping a cell phone photo of someone, then picking the perfect cell phone song for that someone. When he or she calls, the picture appears and the song plays. (One guy even recorded short video clips, on his phone, which is why everyone will remain nameless.)

New Hampshire: E-mail Free Or Die...For Now

July 13, 2004

By Declan McCullagh

New Hampshire's tax commissioner has temporarily abandoned plans to tax a broad swath of online services, including Internet phone calls, chat rooms, Web mail and instant messaging.

A representative of the Department of Revenue Administration said Tuesday that after encountering criticism of the proposal at a public hearing the day before, Commissioner G. Philip Blatsos had decided to leave any Internet tax decisions to the state legislature.
"Because this is a tremendously important policy issue, rather than go through the rulemaking process at this point, we should defer to the legislative study committee," said Val Berghaus, an assistant to Blatsos. "At the request of legislative leaders of the Ways and Means committee, (Blatsos) is going to defer to that request." The legislative committee is scheduled to convene Aug. 4.

Consumers Take A Liking To VoIP; At-Home Use Growing; Four million Broadband Users Considering VoIP, A Pew Survey Has Found

July 13, 2004

By Mike Angell

Houston computer programmer John White makes calls all over to business colleagues, family and friends. He used to use his cell phone since night and weekend calling was cheap.

Now he uses a voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP, service from Vonage to make the calls. He can talk as long as he likes and any time for a flat monthly fee.

"My concern was what quality would be like," White said. "The quality is excellent."

White is one of 300,000 customers who use some type of VoIP service for their home phones. As AT&T and other firms push VoIP service, those numbers should grow. A survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 4 million broadband users were considering VoIP service.
